So I just bought my new to me 2004 hymer 654 last week .
Received the registration document today and it's down as taxation class plg
No weights etc filled in on registration document.
There's 2 plates on the van both stating 3900kg as the weight so should be private hgv

Phoned them up just now and guy says it's been private light goods since new.
I informed him of it's weight and the 2 plates stating it's weight from hymer and alko and I've now to take photos of the plates showing them fitted to vehicle aswell as the registration plate and take it to the post office where they are supposed to be able to tax it for me as phgv

How can that have gone 14 years with wrong taxation class?

I'm off to try and take photos of plates showing reg number also which won't be easy

Is it possible it was originally plated at 3500kg when imported and registered with DVLA, and subsequently up-plated to 3900kg without informing them ?

my B644 was plated at 4,000kg but have also seen them down plated to 3500kg

Same thing happened to me, 5000kg weight, but it was down as HGV Not Private HGV. Duty was the same, they just altered the class on the new V5.
No costs incurred.

It seems to be a common issue Tam. :(

Ours is a tandem axled Hymer, and was plated at 4500Kgs, however, the V5 had it registered as a PLG. The very accommodating local DVLA Office (at the time) sorted it all out for me, and arranged a refund of excess RFL duty, already paid.

I've since up plated to 5500Kgs.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

You say no weights - what not even 'Revenue Weight'? Did you not get a copy of the previous V5C, only the slip of change of keeper to send to DVLA?

I am a bit sceptical about DVLA advice about what the PO can do. I think you have to produce the V5C as issued, and I doubt whether the PO can tax it other than in accordance with that, i.e. they do not have authority to change the Revenue Class whatever evidence you produce.

If I am right you will have to send it all to DVLA Swansea for a new V5C

Sorry to write a downer.

Thanks for previous info re clean and polish. I had got everything ready(T-Cut, Auto-Glym) and it startef raining. Just a bit worried that the weather will get more winterish here before, at my slow pace, I can finish the job.

Good luck with the re-classification.

My wife was post mistress at our local PO and said she definitely would not be able to do PHGV as the documents V5C would show PLG.
She would not be authorised to change the document.
Think DVLA telling porkies to get rid of you.(y)(y)(y)
Reckon you’ll have to send documents back to DVLA? They’re a pain in the arse at times aren’t they?

Not necessarily 'Porkies' but often they spout certainly not correct info, but they do not have access to internet so one cannot ask for confirmation in e-mail.

IMO they are badly managed and trained.

I suggest that before you drive to a main PO that can do re-taxing, that you phone DVLA again and speak to a different person on a different day - probably get a different answer.

Then repeat the excercise.;)

How could a PO issue a new V5C? and without that, regardless of what tax you paid, you would still be in the same position.

Good Luck.

Geoff

Don't waste your time going to PO , it will need to go to DVLA for a new V5 and for them to change details on the system as otherwise all other computers that access the system wont be able to enter any info that it wont see as being relevant . Not all Gov advisers are upto speed on everything they are asked, even when its from another agency take it from me :)

Yes as I did suspect when the tube from dvla told me this the woman in the post office looked at me like I had 3 heads and didn't have a clue. So I phoned dvla again while in the post office and spoke to a woman this time who has no idea why the idiotic guy I spoke to first time told me that.

So I've now to send back the v5 with the correct weight and taxation class filled in section 7 along with a v10 form and a couple of photos of the plates etc.
Accompanied with a cheque for the phgv fee of £165

Of course I don't have a bloody cheque book who uses cheques these days
Only person I know with a cheque book is mum so need to write one out and get her to sign it when in later.

DVLA astound me at times....how some of them get the jobs I don't know

Blooming jobsworth who told you to go to PO needs a boot up the arse, they don’t even think of the stress and hassle it causes all they want to do is tick boxes.

Good luck with the polising up ...take some before and after pics.

Took me 2 or 3 days and still to do wax but will look good once you've done it

Don't hold your breath
If it was that easy everyone would do it and the likes of SVTECH would be out of business
DVLA will want a cert of conformaty showing the gross weight, a pic of the plate, a pic of the van inc number plates and a letter of explanation.

The post office may be able to issue tax the other way round.... Downplating to 3500kg from 3900kg but not upplating.
You have some work ahead of you.

They don't need any certificate

I've been told to send v5 , mot certificate , photo of plate on van , photo of van showing reg no , form v10 and a cheque for £165
She said it will be taxed on receipt and I'd have a new v5 within 2 weeks

I'm not uplating it simply correcting their mistake from 14 years ago.
It was plated at 3900kg when manufactured
But the weight has never been entered in the registration document

Oppps... Just read your post above.
Should have bought a postal order at the post office. . Cost you an extra 3 or 4 quid but would save some time.
I had to have a C of C but that was years ago at local office when we still had them.

Yeah I asked about postal order
For one at that amount there us a 12.50 charge and then recorded delivery to send it at another 6.50 so I told them to stuff that lol
Using mum's check book it's all written out she just needs to sign it for me.

Aye exactly ....the funny thing is I had phoned the general enquiries at dvla and I was put through to that guy who I was told would know better

Then he told me that nonsense

I don't want to sound sexist but I did wonder when he told me to take photos and show them at the post office

I honestly couldn't imagine the women in the post office knowing anything about weight plates etc
