Hello Funsters,
We are thinking of visiting the Dusseldorf show this year and have question, how many used vans are on show ? Obviously lots of new ones but we are looking to buy used and Lhd so Germany seems the best option, seen a few on mobile.de that suit us but dotted all over the country so it would be handy to view a few all in one place, we live just outside Newcastle so direct flights for around £50 ish each way in early Sept.

So Wanderlust what are you looking for? is it something that is like rocking horse poo in the UK, I know people will tell you that everything is cheaper in Germany but with the current exchange rate I don't necessarily think that is true, more choice? yes for sure.

I personally think that you probably get more for your money as there are usually extras already on the vans,we bought our existing van in 2018 and the same van with less spec was £20,000 more in UK ?

Basically funflair the criteria are lhd as we plan on a year in europe (both taking a year out of work) rear beds, rear wheel drive and hopefully Iveco @5000KG + so a payload of a tonne or thereabouts. No overcab bed if possible though this does seem to really narrow the options even more, it doesnt leave many vans, carthago s plus and a few N&B's and Hymers, oh and also under 8m. Air suspension and hydraulic lift supports would be the icing on the cake....
so yes in answer to your question I do think rocking horse poo in the uk.
even on Mobile.de with those search criteria there arent hundreds once you put in a budget of £60K.
thanks for all your replies and interest in our dilemnas.

Hello Skez, Yes it may make things a bit more awkward but we dont plan on staying morethan a night or two in any one place so if that means border crossing once every few months it will be doable just a bit more of a challenge. bigtree had a long look at your van, jury still out on transverse bed, that problem should be solved end of April, we are hiring a Laika Kreos 5010 for a week with transverse bed, if we are still speaking after the week then that layout is an option.

IVECO 60C so 6000kg will be more normal and your best bet as it's got the wider axle, under 8 metres will limit your option though especially on RWD vans which tend to be a bigger 8.5m would give more choice but a Flair 7100 traverse bed would come in on length and a good quality van to live in.

Lenny HB I think you have mistaken me for a premiership footballer...we would look at them but out of our price range sadly. funflair we did have the i7100 on search engine but most seemed to be tag axle Fiats, will have another look cheers.

You are right not many about on the IVECO, the tandem axle Fiat will be a lump less money, just be careful at around 2005/2006 you could spec the 3 litre cam chain 166bhp engine or the standard fit was the older 2.8 with cam belt and I think 146bhp.

I have nothing against fiat and tag axles but we currently have 2 electric bikes we plan to use for most transport whilst parked up, this is only a plan though, it may be the case that after a few months we decide they don't have the range we require so a motorbike/scooter purchase whilst away is plan b, the rear wheel drive/iveco combo should handle this with ease without having to do precise mathematics just to meet payload and axle weights, this is however only our thoughts, I could well be wrong. Only experience I have is reading this forum and watching youtube videos etc.

You might find some useful reading here for the older N+B models but you are right about better payload on the IVECO 60C over the Fiat options "Zuladung ca" is the payload figure ;)

Link works fine(y) it’s on the 50C 5t chassis so need to check payload, after that it’s personal choice, Carthago are decent vans.

Quoting from your post...“A year in Europe”. “border crossing once every few months”
Have you read the threads on here about the ‘possibility’ of the 90 day rule been enforced, 90days in followed by 90 days out of Shengen area?

which equates to a 'border crossing' once every few months, so long as the crossing is outside of schengen zone and they dont go back into schengen zone for 3 months - so mainland europe for 3 months, morocco for 3 months could work, BUT that doesnt equate to a year in Europe as you point out, the rules may change, so its best that anyone planning, plans properly !

I have read some of the 90 day enforcement rules but as I understand it nothing is agreed yet so planning is difficult if you don't know what to plan for. If we need to do 90 in 90 out then yes a year around europe may not be practical, if it just means applying for an extended tourist Visa in different countries then that's really not too big a problem, it will curtail the spontaneity a bit but not a lot we can do about that, just hope it doesn't become so difficult that we can no longer do an extended trip. Plan B Canada (y)

You might want to consider going to the Dusseldorf fair even though there are no second hand purchases to be made, (apart from cruising the extensive camping area/site and seeing if people are selling their vans direct from there). It's worth a look if you can build it into a wider trip just because of its size, range of vehicles, and ideas that might give you as to layouts etc. Plus the accessories halls are pretty good to.
