Ah - we have a couple of those at the house we've just bought, I was wondering what they were (inspection chambers?) and whether they'd be suitable for black waste?

Do you mean the oval silver bit in the photo? Its a rodding cover, designed to facilitate use of draining rods in the event of a blockage.
Its normally fine to use these as long as the drain under is the main waste pipe. Lots of homes (mine not included) have a grey waste & a black waste pipes in a similar way to our motorhomes, the grey waste is usually only for water from the roof etc whereas the black one is for your toilet etc. Get caught using the wrong one by your local authority & it'll mean a fine.

Yes it's a ridding point.
This is connected to the main sewage drain and not the surface water. I know this because I fitted all the underground pipe work after i built the extension :)

This is much easier than dropping the cassette waste down the toilet (y)

If you live in an older terraced house all surface and sewage goes down the same drain.

In more modern estates nothing but surface water should go into that drain and all sewage and "grey" goes into the sewage drain (y)

Lift your man hole cover for the sewage and put some drain tracer down the rodding point.

If you see the tracer it's ok to use (y)

Quite correct mate, ours is an old house & I uses the rodding cover to tip the contents of the toilet into as well.
