Lovely area with lots of excellent wild camping spots, BUT all of the castles and abbeys are closed, fenced off (some you can't even get close to) pending inspection/repair.

There's one crew to do the lot - currently at Sweetheart Abbey, so it will be quite some time before they're all accessible again.

Been like that for a while in our experience. That's why we decided it would not be worth becoming members of Historic Scotland who look after a great many of these sites. A pity but Health and Safety rules I suppose.

Sweetheart Abbey had been covered in scaffolding for years with the workers cabins being unoccupied for 3 years according to a local who we spoke to around a month ago with no sign of work starting again so I think it's going to be a very long time before it or any others open.
