Have any of u funsters been around Dumfries and Galloway, were heading that way at the end of the month.
We are going around the coastal road to Oban then heading inland across to the A1 and back home .We only have a week so any advice on decent sites and places to visit would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. 😊

Thats a full on trip in a week. Are you sure you will have time to go round D&G as well?! Not sure what you mean by 'decent sites'. Maybe lorger has some ideas?

We like:

Moffat CCC which is close to the town centre and the motorway.

Garlieston CAMC in a small village and is remote.

New England Bay CAMC which is even more remote and unlike most club sites.

They all offer nice places to walk and/or cycle.

Plenty of CS/CL's around but not been to any of them. Check S4S or similar for wild camping if that's your thing.

A week? Enjoy and all the best!

I just read the post and thought the same thing. I wonder if the OP has got the place name of Oban correct:unsure:

No real coastal road from Glasgow and no inland from Oban to the A1

There has been a good few suggestions put forward already. I would go with them, stay innDumfrieshire and forget Oban… it’s always raining there anyway , or at least the times we’ve been 😂

If you prefer to wild ,Glencaple castle corner and New England bay has an elsan and fresh water point as does Isle of Whithorn (not an island).

Wigtown harbour is a nice stop over and so is Dalbeattie or if you want the beach, nearby Dhoon bay is lovely , has a toilet block and although it’s listed as a day only stopover it’s ok to stop overnight. I’ve checked with FOI.

Just to add that the elsan point on the Isle of Whithorn was still out of action as of yesterday, when we left. Fresh water is fine.

there’s a sign to say the nearest elsan point is at a place called Stairhaven, which is along the coast towards Stranraer. Give or take 20 miles each way.

locals on the Isle don’t know when the elsan point might be fixed…

Oban is not in D&G and a week travelling to Oban from Nottingham is a bit of a rush.
Just take a tour around D&G as recommended by irnbru. :hugs:

Garlieston Club Campsite.

not particularly cheap ( 3 people ) £42.60 per night but it has got a very nice view.
thanks to every one for there suggestions for our tour of Dumfries and Galloway, we had a lovely holiday there and we did eat at the Steampacket Inn Isle of Whithorn as suggested and it was brilliant , Daughter had Turbot and Mussel's stunning food.

We did the SW300 last September, really enjoyed it. A couple of stand-outs....
The Steam Packet Inn on the Isle of Whithorn, free parking in the field behind with toilets and fresh water. Great food.
Kirkcudbright. We stayed at the campsite, the aire had just opened. Sunday lunch at the Selkirk Arms was excellent.
Girvan. Overnight on the beach car park, toilet, shower, water etc all for 6 quid. The fish supper was memorable!
Took us a month and we only got south of Ayr!

There is a very nice CL type site just outside Castle Douglas.
It's called Mollance & they have 5 motorhome pitches, all with EHU, sustainably heated toilet which is always immaculate. Dogs on leads are welcome.
The couple who run it are called Sheena & Derek, the place is very peaceful & only 2- or 3-minutes' drive from Castle Douglas.

We only live 36 miles from the site & even though it's only a short hop away, we love going there.

They also have a CMC CL for 5 vans, & they are usually open all year.

The roads are no problem, most are 2 lane with the singles having plenty of passing places.
We also used a few forestry CP's as mentioned by someone else. They were great, very quiet and trouble free, but with little facilities.
On the way up we stayed at the Metal Bridge Inn, Carlisle, free when you have a meal. No lecky but everything else. Recommended but book to be safe.
Another cracking spot was wilding overnight at Sweetheart Abbey car park. Free and toilets. Nice walk up the nearby hill.
Campsite at Culzean Castle was excellent with great walks.

Mull of Galloway lighthouse. Great visit. Lots of people wilding there but very windy when we visited so we stayed in a farmers field about 1mile previous. Nice coastal walk to the lighthouse cafe for lunch. Farmer comes around to collect £4 - brilliant!

Drive the A712 The Queen's Way through the Galloway Forest Park, lovely and there looked to be a few wild camping spots but can't confirm as we didn't stay.

Our van is 7.5m & I can't think of a road which I wouldn't take it onto. I live in the heart of the area & love wild camping in The Galloway Forest Park, it's not to avoid paying for a site, it's the peace & tranquility of places like Glen Trool that pull me back time after time.

Visit the area once & you will want to come back.

Have a great time & please feel free to message me if you need any further advice, I won't be offended if you choose something different, there is just so much to explore.

Check out Garliston Lodge, one of my favourite sites. Walled garden and lake and walking distance to the pub and harbour.

We did Dumfries snd Galloway in July 2021 and headed for the forest first. Lasted two nights and a day of cycling on the forest trails before admitting complete defeat and heading for the coast. The reason, MIDGES!!! They love the forest by day or night and there were swarms of them. Got to the coastal campsites and they miraculously disappeared. Ended up doing the Mull Peninsular and the Isle of Mull. Just beautiful and no Midges.
