Hi all

On the 12th December I attempted to start my 2019 Ducato 2.3 multijet. It was cold -7, it started made one hell of a noise, immediately switched it off. After some research discovered the issue with the scuttle and water ingress and freezing on the timing belt/pulleys and causing it to sleep. Contacted Fiat who gave me Ref number said they will look at it even though warranty was up a year ago and had only done 12k.

It's st the dealers now, been re timed , new belt but still not very well, engine started but making noises. My question is what damage may have accured and has any body had any dealing with Fiat and this issue and did Fist repair free of charge as it is a know fault.

Thank you for and advice given

I can't help with your question but hopefully Fiat will do the right thing and get you back on the road quickly.

What were the garage findings when they looked at it as if the belt had slipped I would expect them to take the head of to inspect for damage. It could have bent valves where they have hit the pistons.

Hi welcome.
The very least should be a head off inspection in my opinion.

Hi, that fitted new belt to see if engine was OK, sadly it is not. Engine starts but is very rough, next thing I'm told is engine out and head off to inspect. This is all caused by frozen water on the belt. Pics show timing slipped and rust on pulley and rust water stained cover

This sounds familiar. Was there a discussion on here recently over a similar incident?

Thank you for posting the photos that really does show the damage done by poor scuttle drainage and the need to improve it even with an at home mod.

This need not be a problem if you fit a scuttle drain kit that's made and sold by PaulandChrissy as I have to our Peugeot Boxer MoHo.

I thought this was 2019 so an X290 not X250. I thought the problems with water ingress under the bonnet was sorted with the -X290 and that the drainage kits were for X250?

Does this problem just affect the coachbuilts, I'm guessing a class aren't affected by this design?

Hi Guys
My scuttle drain kit doesn’t fit 2019 models. Only fits X250 up-to 2014 when the model changed. The post 2014 models do still leak occasionally between the scuttle plastic and the screen. This can only de fixed by resealing the plastic scuttle back onto the screen. Quick observation. Did the engine have sufficient anti freeze. Looks like the water pump may have frozen and stripped the timing belt teeth while cranking. ?

Only the Fiat cab that's affected, generally, A Class's are much better protected, no Fiat scuttle & engine set back inside the bonnet.

There's 3 scuttles to worry about. I believe a blockage on the centre one is what causes water ingress into the engine. There's a joint in the tube which is not a proper seal and if the blockage is at the bottom of the tube the water backs up and spills out of the joint. This video shows the problem.

I'm a newbie
The lower (blocked) hose in the above YT goes through the inner wing and has a flap over the end - this flap WILL NOT allow debris to fall out and this is the cause of the hose blocking, also if badly fitted it is crushed just before it goes through the inner wing, making it even worse.

As a short term measure I cut the flap off to allow it to drain properly, will look under the wing in warmer weather and see if it now allows water to flow onto anything that might corrode.

I've just unblocked the exit flap on my X290. Had to remove the wing liner to access the flap. Definitely worth it though.

Motorhoming since 2018.
Whenever I have the hose out washing down the MH, I flush all 3 outlets. But as someone has already said, surly something FIAT should have addressed years ago.

Not a problem on vans that are driven every. Its when they are left parked up for weeks sometimes month which happens most of the time with Motorhomes. A very small percentage of their total build.

There's a few issues FIAT bury their head in the sand over and deny any knowledge....

This one
reverse judder
Airbag ECU
probably others too

Again all Motorhome related so quanties of overall production very small so probably not enough to concern them.

I'm not defending them, I've been a victim of the airbag ECU. Just pointing out why they haven't taken these problems seriously.

Don't know about others but surely the airbag ECU would be just the same on any Ducato van?

Yes but my local Fiat garage said they rarely fail on vans but do on MH conversion, so must be something to do with the converters?

Interesting point that. Sometimes the failure is blamed on voltage at startup. The first thing that comes to my mind is the split charge relay arrangement. It is generally only found in motorhomes and is the bit that links the two 12V systems at startup. Is it possible that the sudden cut in of the link would cause a voltage spike up or down? Has anyone had an airbag ECU failure when the the split charge has been replaced by a B2B which keeps the systems separate?

To me this sounds like a far more plausible explanation to these failures than ice frozen on the belt.
