Hopefully this should be a really simple question for those of you knowledgeable about engines ;)

We noticed recently that the oil level indicator lights (the ones that come on briefly when you turn the engine on) are showing that we a are a little low on oil - which came as a bit of a surprise because we only had the MH serviced and oil and filter changed a few months ago. Confirmed the reading via the dipstick which showed the oil level was well below the max (though above the minimum). On checking the invoice from the garage they put 5L of oil in when they did the oil & filter change.
I'm not certain which engine we have (I can't find it written anywhere on the MH or in any of the documentation) but I believe its the 130 multijet (2017, Euro 6, auto) and checking in the handbook for the 110/130 MultiJet it says:
Engine sump (litres): 5.3
Engine sump and filter (litres): 5.9
So how much oil should the garage have put in when they changed the oil and filter? 5.3L or 5.9L?

They often don’t fill it to the very top line as it can cause problems when the oil warms up etc

If the filter or drain plug have not sealed perfectly, you can lose a little oil over time. I had this on a van that I paid somebody to service. They no longer do any work for me

Assuming they changed the filter, then 5.9 litres. Although I'd be happy with a tad less than the max mark on the dipstick.

Also, check the grade of oil they used is compatible with that recommended in the Fiat owners handbook.

You can expect to use some oil in a few months of motoring so sounds perfectly normal. You just need to top up to max on dipstick.

Additionally, I have read that the 5 illuminated dots don't always indicate an oil level, [ confusing], they can also refer to checks the self analysis process has gone through. Having wisely checked it manually though you have found it's a little low, which it would be if they have only added 5 ltrs. Top it up a bit at a time on a level area, to much oil brings it's own problems as well.
Regards.
Mike.

Now that's interesting. I have asked the question a few times as to what exactly do the empty square boxes indicate and have never received an answer. There is nothing in the Peugeot manual about them.

When l had an oil and filter change the invoice showed 6 lts of oil had been added.

Its not so bad, they only charge you for 5lt
It seem to me that they filled it with a 5lt can of the correct grade and then started the engine which filled the filter.
Buy a litre of oil and top it up - to be sure.
I would consider buying a 5lt can - it will be much cheaper in the long run

I spoke to one of the mechanics where I used to work and they don't fill to the line anymore because when the DPF does its recycling thing some fuel ends up in the oil which raises the level of the oil .

I buy 1 x 5ltr and 1 x 1ltr and get the oil and filter changed when doing the MOT the garage tips the 5 ltrs in and leave me to check the oil later at home when it settles I put in about half a ltr that is about mid way between the marks and that is it for the year. Bill

I have found on our 2019 . 130, that sometimes it shows 5 dots and others 4, then back to 5 on the next ignition cycle without any intervention to the oil level from me.
I still also intermittently get the dreaded orange warning light, but now ignore it, and again after a couple of ignition cycles it also extinguishes itself !!.

There may be a trace of diesel in the mix but not enough to notice on the dipstick.

We have a 2.3 Fiat base 2013.

I can suck it out or drain it out and only 5 litres ever comes out, or goes back in.

I haven’t a clue why either as the manual says 5.9. 🤷‍♂️

The manual probably gives the amount to fill a brand new dry engine when you change the oil there is always a bit left in somewhere.
