yes, after reading all the previous threads and other forum posts, I told them today that i wanted them to over fill it slightly and to use the synthetic gear oil.

Im just so glad this never happened on the way to Wales this coming May bank holiday...(y)

Glad it has turned out less painful that it might have been but probably worth asking them, politely of course, what they are doing to flush out any rubbish in the oil.

I did sacrifice a bag of crisps last night to Graunch, the God of gears, hope that helped.

If you think the 5 speed is fun try sorting out a 6 speed jobby.. I am £1400 lighter and could only find ONE place that had both a good name AND a box in stock ( Mine started off with the 5th gear but as we had to drive a further 300ish miles, by the time we got home every gear was a bag of spanners.. When we opened it up, the slipper rings were buggered, the selector arms had chunks out of them ( gawd knows how ! ) and you could get hold of the 1st motion shaft and move it about !!!

Before we took delivery of the van they had put a new clutch in for us.. When the oil was drained out there was only about 1.8 litres, so reckon the sods had lost some oil and not replaced it

All this is very interesting but! its not sorting what I posted for!! I need some recommendation for a gearbox specialist or just how I can find the final drive ratio to make my beast cruise at lower revs. This is for a 3ltr 6speed box please.

Sorry ..
OK, take the vin number to a Fiat main dealer and they will be able to pull up ALL the build spec.. Usually charge £30 plus vat though!

Over 25 year's
My geer box had a slight wine and was a bit noche on gear change a friend of mine who runs a taxi company recommended this product http://www.americantechnology.co.uk/all-ametech-products-32-c.asp
I also am back driving the mini bus this also had a whining gear box it has done 5k since it was added and is performing very well
the guy that owns the taxi company his taxi a 2.5 Puget was using oil and fuel consumption had gone up after it has now done 10k and is ruing quitter than it ever has and using no oil has just had oil change and treated agene
so this stuff seems to work
doubt if it would help the OP but may help with fifth Gere problems
will let you know as some has ben added to a 2.8 jtd with a bit of a whine
I know there are many on her that don't believe in cures in a can but have over the last year both my shelf and friends have used Theas to good effect over the last twelve months
it is a individuals choice what you want to do but I personally love the stuff

With all this talk about gearbox issues I am starting to think it may be time for the Swepco Gear oil to come out - I think I have enough left. This oil is bloody expensive but when I was into building (and maintaining) early 911's it was the only oil to use. It would extend the life of gearboxes and final drives for years when 'normal' ep90 would leave the boxes with accelerated issues. It is blue, immensely thick (have to warm it to get it in) and stinks like nothing else I have smelled before........ Once it gets hot it naturally thins down and gets into everything, not too sure if its on any Fiat recommendations but it was never on Porsche's either, though used a lot in racing cars etc.
Food for thought - again.:)
Was VERY difficult to get not so long back in the UK.

Trikeman. ;)

Dunno about other box's but the 6 speed in my X250 requires hypoid 80 and it has warnings not to use a multigrade, so maybe a 90 weight is not suitable ?

Well, I'm back on the road again... new 5th gear, syncro hub etc... gearbox drained out, new clutch in (I asked them to do this as it was a bit suspect IMO) and 3 litres of synthetic gear oil... seems loads better / smoother...

From what I can see on the invoice, £310 inc vat for parts, not sure on the cost of labour as I had a new clutch put in which knocked up the labour, but the garage hourly rate was £40 ph plus vat. Some have said it's a couple of hours to do the 5th gear so go off a figure of £400-£500 as a rough idea, but will vary depending where you take it.

** don't do what I did and get tempted to try 5th while it keeps popping out as you'll find it'll probably go on you and jam up the selector. .. I ended up at the side of the road stuck between 5th gear and reverse...
