enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
Hi. Ive seen a few posts allude to issues with the fuel filter on a 130bhp ducato engine, but what are the issues and how would they manifest themselves? I havent had any issues but i like to be aware of known issues so i can recognise them or even carry out any 'common' preventative maintenance before anything does happen. Its an old fashioned approach that works best for me.

Briefly if you take the top off to replace the filter cartridge and it is not done properly it leaks afterwards.

Two faults that I know of and not necessarily due to incorrect replacement of filters, both cause serious leakage.
Leaks around the seal and leaks from the push on connectors, the latter happened to mine some 15 months after filter replacement by someone that definitely does do it correctly.

Many, including myself, carry a complete replacement plastic filter unit which is relatively easy, if a little messy, to replace. There are videos and instructions available online and on this forum, the complete units are available online for around £65 to £80.

I seem to remember that @Techno found that you should only use genuine Fiat filters which then come with a better quality rubber gasket seal that after market filter sellers. When replacing the filter you need to use the special tool to fit the filter housing in for torquing down the lid on the plastic housing. In this way you can minimise the leak re-occuring.

The only way I experienced the problem twice was to find I had diesel leaking under the van and a fuel gauge dropping faster than usual.

I've now changed my van so have a spare filter housing and the special tool to sell at some time if anyone is interested. I shall be at Newbury Show in May.

Thanks,you’ve saved me over £50.
Being a sad ”belt and braces” type,I was going to carry a spare fuel filter and housing. But I’m in a 2006 X244.........so Im safe.
Of course,if you are proven wrong....the hard way.....I know how to find you!:D;);););););););):D

You still need to change it periodically - it is a filter. My 2012 is a steel canister and I have a spare.

I changed just the filter last year and after several miles it poured out diesel. I recommend changing the complete item inc housing if you need to. Best to leave well alone though.
