Am I obliged to use the Fiat Selinia engine oil in my 2015 2.3 130bhp Ducato or can I use any ACEA C2 standard oil? The manual seems to imply that I can but it also mentions a FIAT classification number.

I tend to agree. After some research I bought oil to top up our 2016 Euro 5 Ducato from the local Fiat main dealer, in order to get the correct one. It is a bit of a minefield these days...Advisable to avoid warranty issues if still under warranty

Does this mean that oil changes can only be done by a Fiat Professional garage then?but bear in mind you need diagnostic equipment to reset the oil change and degredation counters on Euro 5 and 6 Ducatos.

I use Opie as well, always good service. So far not needed to top up on 2015 with 14500 miles, quite surprised by that. Also I do like Fuchs oil which I get from Opie via ebay or their web site.I use Shell Helix Ultra ECT, much cheaper than Selenia, more easily available and meets the correct Fiat specification. Opie Oils are one of the cheapest suppliers.
When I say cheaper, it's still a fairly expensive oil, but you need to avoid cheap oil which, although the correct viscocity, may not meet the correct specification and could shorten the life of your DPF, EGR etc.
You are not going to do any harm topping up the sump with a different brand of oil as long as it meets the required specification. If you do a full oil change then you know going forward what is in the vehicle though, but bear in mind you need diagnostic equipment to reset the oil change and degredation counters on Euro 5 and 6 Ducatos.
Plenty of good small local non franchised workshop will have correct equipment to reset and diagnose.Does this mean that oil changes can only be done by a Fiat Professional garage then?

Do you have that in writing?Only two weeks ago Fiat contacted me and said on the Euro 5 engine use
5w30 ACEA C2 grade synthetic oil. Any oil of this grade is OK.
I believe the Ducato handbook specifies Selena oil and the appropriate specification reference. If I had a newish vehicle within warranty I would make dam sure that the correct oil was used. The reason for this being that warranty claims are authorised by the manufacturer not the servicing dealer. After the warranty period is over any quality oil of the correct spec should be fine.

A software program for windows machine called " multiecuscan" with an obd adapter can do both resets. Software is free but the licence key is about £50. Does all manner of things as well as the service and oil reset.
I am intending to purchase as I am out of warranty and intend doing own servicing in future.

its even worse on a euro6 the spec is 0/30
Had the same issues, mines a X290 16 plate but euro 5+, contacted Fiat Camper and spoke to Italy who confirmed in an email it was 5/30My 2017 Ducato (Euro 5) has now covered 2500 miles, and oil level is half way down dipstick. Its not due for 1st service until Nov. 2019, so may need a top up prior to then. My handbook only mentions 0w-30 acea2 oil, but a call to my local Fiat dealer, giving the service dept. my reg. no.- the guy said "yours needs 5w-30". I assume from this that the service man is quoting for a Euro 5 version, but Deneb`s post above states that Euro 5+ engines ARE on 0w-30.... As mine is a 2017 vehicle, I assume it must be a euro5+ as it is one of the last ones before they went to Euro 6. How do I tell if mine is a Euro5+ and not "just" a Euro5?
