Living the dream.
Have you tried giving it a bit of a thrash down the motorway, they need it every now and then.
Italian tune up, hold 3rd gear up hill over 3000rpm for a few minutes.

Is it reluctant to rev over 2800 rpm?
If so could be the turbo sticking or rubber pipe to it cracked.
I bought a MH private, on way home red light came on if I tried to rev it.
My son said sticking turbo, yes it was, spindle needing freeing.
Slid under and gave it a few twists and sorted (y)
But it may be something else ......

If you cant sort it go to Powerline Services at Shipley. they sorted my 2.8jtd first go. This was after Sewells of Leeds had attempted to repair it many times over a year.

My 2.8 jtd started flashing red light between 5th & 4th gear this went on for some months and I started to be light on the accelerator and the light disappeared .My engine then started blowing out a lot of black smoke under pressure, tried thrashing and cleaner to no avail . In the end a diesel mechanic found that the turbo had seized , the pin had rusted and broken , the guy who looks after my van drilled out the pin and made a new one. , it now goes like stink with no red light and no black smoke

I believe that year was the last year the Ducato didn't have standard OBD2 connector and used it's own system. I have a 53 and couldn't get OBD to work but this did and allowed me with the help of Wildbill (Still grateful) to diagnose a faulty injector which was causing low manifold pressure.

I would get the Fiat ECU Scan software (Free download).
Buy a ELM327 bluetooth adapter.
https://amzn.to/2Ck3fMh (The one I bought)

And check the error codes that are causing the engine managment light to come on. Otherwise you could guess and guess then fire the parts gun at the van and still get nowhere.

Hi Grommet

As my 2001 Ducato 2.8 JTD is not OBD2 compliant can you let me (and perhaps others) know the link for the free scan download and I will get one of your bluetooth adaptors.

Thanks in anticipation. Clive

Just clicked your Amazon link and that one is currently unavailable but it suggests others.

Should it move freely when gripped with pliars ???
Does it need any oil on it
I used an open ended spanner over the spindle. Should be relatively easy to move.
Shouldn't be tight. You could use oil but it won't last long.
You were not the original poster, is yours playing up?

I don't think so. I have wondered about the turbo when speed drops off on inclines though, but overall I think it's just a characteristic of the engine.
Just thought I'd ask as when I'm next under there I'll give it a wiggle

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
i had the same issue with a renault van, it turned out that the fuel pump had started to 'disintegrate' and was sending small minute particles into the injectors, which then failed. had to have the injectors reconditioned, new fuel pump, tank flushed out etc etc. Cost me well over a grand. A specialist diesel engineer suggested low grade fuel at supermarkets doesnt help !!

The symptoms were the same as you describe, change your fuel filter and check your old fuel filter hasnt got any minute particles in it using a magnet. A £10 fuel filter might save you a lot of money !

This thread has been an interesting read as my Fiat does exactly the same thing.... and does not have a turbo. Red Injector/engine light comes on when changing down gear, usually 5 to 4, sometimes 4 to 3, mostly when using engine to brake. I probably clean the injectors twice a year but must say it never totally resolves the problem. Its currently doing it fairly readily so need to investigate further. My van is reg 52 and not sure its got an OBD socket... any ideas?

Sorry I missed your question. I just went to look for where I downloaded it from and it has now changed names apparently. It is called Multi ecu scan diagnostics.

It is the only software I found that handles old pre OBD diagnostics.

Homer. see my post above yours !! replace your fuel filter and see if theres any metal particles in the residue. they are minute particles so best to test with a magnet, though with mine the fuel residue did appear to be 'shiny' so I worked it out pretty quickly. if only I had thought to replace the fuel filter and check it a few weeks earlier, i could have saved myself a four or five hundred pounds for the sake of a ten pound fuel filter

PS: I am not sure if the most recent version still support old models so you might want to check if you decide to buy the full version.

I tried to find my download but can't sorry. I used the free version which doesn't do things like power steering, ABS etc. But it did give me a graph of diesel manifold pressure (think that was what it was called) and I could see it never reached 100 and it needed 140 (from memory) to fire up. It did eventually try to start when it reached 130 once, but failed to start and the pressure dropped right back down to zero again. Replaced the injector that was leaking and the pressure shot up to 180 on next test.

I'm with Larby on this one.

What he has shown is the wastegate valve.
If the 'van hasn't been used too much or has had, shall we say not been serviced in this particular place, then that spindle will stick, seize, call it what you will and with the result exactly as you have described.

Unless you have 'Pit' facilities, put the van on your ramps, chock all wheels and apply handbrake firmly. In addition, leave the van in first gear.

Crawl under the van and the offending part will be seen tucked up in the middle of the underside, immediately behind the engine lump.
Apply liberally with grease, from one end to the other end of the spindle.

Crawl out and give the 'van a run out ensuring that the turbo comes into play.

If necessary repeat the procedure and I very much doubt you will see the engine light coming on again.

If it does, what I have just had you do was a waste of time but at least you will have had your exercise for the day.:D
