Has anyone changed their mattress ?

We are thinking of replacing with memory foam, but not sure if it will be heavier than the part foam part sprung original mattress ?

We changed our drop down bed mattress for a foam/memory foam type which is about 3 inches thicker and does weigh more, don't know how much heavier but I will be locking for updated bed struts.
We bought a normal domestic double and cut it to shape with an electric carving knife and also chamfered the front edge to give clearance against roof when it's up.

I managed to squeeze an inch of memory foam inside the original mattress cover and on top of the existing mattress.

I never realised you could do that ! did it work out ok ?
Were there no mattresses available of similar thickness to original ?
We did exactly that for our french bed. Perfect . Used the original mattress as a pattern . So much cheaper and fits perfectly .

We went for the thicker mattress think that being just foam, we may feel the slats of the bed base.
With chamfering the front edge the bed now goes up further than it did.

Can you close a drop-down bed with a duvet left on it?

If it is any help we bought one of the zip cover ones ( easy to open and cut the foam and just folded under the excess cover after ) We bought from Ikea after trying each for comfort !

Okay I weighed the Hymer mattress, bearing in mind its bits of foam stuck together around a sprung interior, it weighs approx 13kg.
So need to think about this as not sure about the struts limits.

I've just seen these in my local Lidl. They look really good. been thinking of replacing mine with something similar. Has anyone actually bought & used one ?
Would be interested to hear.
Don't have my van handy to measure but thought it was basically double bed size. Could anyone advise please ?
Incidentally we bought a memory foam for home use but find it SO / TOO hot at night. So be aware that it's a characteristic of memory foam.

I put a link to that about 4 posts back, that's the one we were looking at. They are varying sizes, about 50mm to long for our 544 but easy trimmed.

Update. We bought king size mattress from Lidl. Cost £79.
I was wrong 're weight , it actually referred to weight of people on it.
The king size fits snugly on drop down bed in our 2012 B544. We're off tomorrow for weekend to Cairngorm area so will report what it's like to sleep on. The bed closes up okay so weight of mattress not a problem.

Swapping pressurised struts is not as easy as you may think. It may be better just to assist the old ones a little bit more when you lift the bed.

Mine does,,, pillows, ladder, few bits and pieces, it’s good storage for flat stuff!! Spare duvet, pillows,,

But my mattress is only 4 or 5 ins thick!!
We do too. We use an Abru 3 step up instead of the original stepladder, so it’s much bigger and it sits on top of the duvet, and the silver screen is there too. Everything fits easily. We have the original memory foam mattress. (y)

Just as an update, I bought the Lidl mattress & have cut to size using a bread knife.
Although the mattress is about 2 inches thicker it fits into the original Hymer cover easily.
Just have to find a night to test it properly.
Off to Bonterra next week so will get a good test there.

Just been out in our B544 and Lidl mattress was fine. Better than original Hymer sring/foam mattress.

We didn't cut ours down although it is slightly bigger than original it's a snug fit on bed base. Lifts up and down fine weight not an issue, if anything it may be lighter than original.
