What are the roads like between Split and Dubrovnik and has anyone taken the ferry to the island to avoid Bosnia?

The roads are Absolutely fine, we didn’t use the ferry. We stopped at the border and tried to buy third party insurance but the offices were closed. Faced with Hobson’s choice we drove on. (carefully)

We took the ferry on the way down, but it was not agood idea the peninsula roads are very narrow and full of trucks who don't move over when approaching you at speed. Came back via Bosnia without insurance cover, much safer but slightly spooky in 50 grands worth of MH.

We ve done both, either is fine IMHO. I'm prepared to take the chance of about 5 miles or so and the border guards didn't seem to care.

We did the same but didn’t encounter any trucks...

If you had been able to buy insurance at the border I wonder who would be selling it and how reliable it would be if needed.

We took the ferry from Ploce to Trpanj. Cost was about 45 euros. Probably gone up now.

Get some insurance at the border and spend some time in Bosnia... We found it more interesting than Croatia

Travelling south from Split you have the choice of the inland motorway (excellent, quiet and reasonably priced) or the coastal route through the Makarska Riviera (a really beautiful stretch with loads of campsites along the way). We used the ferry which was ok.

Nobody around at the Bosnian borders when we have traveled so no issues. I have been told that if you buy your insurance in any other country in Europe except the UK you have full European cover including countries not in the EU. !!!

We have been to Greece traveling through non EU countries Montenegro and Albania, these all have maned borders. Here you will show passports and have vehicle documents available should they be asked for. If you don’t have insurance for that country you can buy third party cover at the same time. I would view this as basic legal cover and nothing more. At some borders even if you have managed to get cover from a UK insurer it may not be acceptable if it is not printed on green paper.

Despite the problems and risks involved with our journeys along the Adriatic, we are pleased to have done them and hope to repeat the journey before too long. We are perhaps fortunate in that we have an old Hymer of modest value, if we had 100 K gin palace we would perhaps think differently. It’s quite easy to drive to Greece keeping within the EU.
