Whats the big deal with having a medical every 5 years. Us truckers have been doing it when we get to the age of 45.
People will invariably refuse to accept how their illness, disability, or failing eyesight can affect their driving, so they should be forced, by law, to take a medical, especially when they are driving large heavy vehicles.
Anything that can make the roads safer cannot be argued with.

5 years is to long for guy's driving 40 tons IMHO:winky:

A doctor can advise the Driving Agency of any medical condition at any time, not just when the 5 yearly medical is due.
Any HGV driver who drives, when knowingly suffering from a medical condition which should be notified, can be charged with dangerous driving. If the driver was to be invoved in an accident, the penalties can be severe, very often resulting in a prison sentance.

Employers of HCV & PCV Drivers also have a duty to inform the Driving Agency of Drivers health problems, plus have a duty to inspect Driving Licences on a regular basis, normally 6 months to ensure a Driver has not had his licence taken away on any grounds.

Hi Olley

Women are statistically worse drivers than men, in fact per mile driven they have more crashes, BUT Insurance companies only look at the bottom line and because women drive slower they tend to cause less damage, the other important factor is that they tend to do far less miles, so the riskhours per year are less.
