I bet his superiors never heard about that.....he would be in so much shit.

I doubt it As I traveled that route almost every weekday on my Honda I once escorted/guided 7 (yes 7) M/C cops to Southend
I too had a white Volvo Estate T5 went like the proverbial and yes other drivers moved over when they saw me coming, can't think why:whistle: I and it also appeared on 'Police Camera Action' which is story I'll recall not here on a public forum but at a meet.......perhaps :sneaky: I can say that we only knew about it AFTER seeing it on telly

Since 2008 (started in a VW T4 campervan)
Volvo always did make the best 'Q' cars.

I had a VW Scirocco & friends would often say '"Oh, saw you the other day going ..." & if I drove past a police car they would always look.

Changed to a beige coloured Volvo 260 (or was it 360 - long time ago now), which had a single carb 2lt lump in it. There was a twin carb sport version which had a black lip spoiler on the boot & a couple of other go-faster bits on it. Drove one once & it was harsh & inflexible - not nice to drive at all. Apart from the badge, mine was indistinguishable from a 240, which had a 1.4 Renault engine in it. There were lots round here - mostly farmers' wives shopping cars. I vanished from the face of the earth - nobody ever saw me anywhere, cops never noticed me drive past.

The best of it was that the 360, while not as sporty to drive as the Sirocco, turned in faster A to B journey times. 'Twas a great car. Coincidentally it was a time in my life that I really didn't want everyone knowing where I was or where I had been.:whistle:

On and off for many years.
What is an endorsement, is it extra qualification or some sort of bonus for being f=good?

You made me remember the first time we hired a car in the US. Martin had 3 points (speeding, the one and only time he got caught). the clerk said "Wow you must be a good driver sir with an endorsement, never mind Ma'am, I'm sure you are a good driver as well." We laughed for the rest of the holiday!

Dunno, but im sure they were black at one point.....maybe that was the HGV licence.
Yep, the old HGV licence was black and the old PSV licence was a very flimsy bit of pale blue paper - But we did get a nice shiny badge which would entitle us to free meals and things at the appropriate places! Those were the days!

@Foghorn Leghorn is correct. It isn't just Spain, lot's of EU countries require you to carry ID. Personally I hate carrying my passport unless absolutely necessary. The photocard driving licence is accepted everywhere as valid ID, and it is so convenient to carry.

Don't forget, driving your own vehicle abroad, you must be able to produce the V5, and photo ID to prove that you own the vehicle.

My mother and Father were extremely reluctant to change to photocard, but when the dreaded 70 year renewal came, they loved it. Dad actually said he wished he'd changed it sooner!

But doesn't the V5 say it is not proof of ownership but simply where and to whom the vehicle is registered?

But not to a foreigner. Here it assumes ownership so they think all do.
the old paper licence is still acceptable in any EU country it is after all the "European model" licence.

Do not confuse this with the "counterpart" to the current plastic card licence. This is still valid but will be abolished in June of this year - it was to be earlier but the processes were not completely in place to allow car hire firms and others to check endorsement history so the January date was postponed until June.

In theory the bit about the paper 'EU' one is correct. In practice, without an IDP it's normally useless.
When I first moved here with a plastic photocard licence it wasn't accepted without an IDP ?? Spain had only just started issuing plastic ones.

I've read that about the car hire companies before but can't see how they check UK licences when they have no way of checking any EU ones ?

probably a case of because they always have been able to check the UK endorsements they do not want to lose that facility. You are right that they cannot check most foreign licences - often they do not have access to the releveant authority but also of course because not many countries other than UK rely (up until June this year of course) upon a counterpart to show endorsements.

Was Spian in the EU when you first moved there? If it wasn't that may hvave been the reason for the requirement of the IDP (which only acts as a translation in that it is in a standardised form)

Yes ,they'd been in it 14/15 years before I arrived.
Even when I changed my licence to a Spanish one in 2002 all we got was a 3 fold piece of paper with photo stapled in ?? :( It was 2007 before we finally got a plastic one back.:)

That was probably the time that they went across to the European model driving licence. The UK joined in 1973 but did not adopt the European model until much later
