Hello.

I understand I will need to renew my driving licence when I reach 70, and will need to take a medical to retain the c category. What I'm unsure of, and hopefully some of you fellow funster can help me out whith is; what other categorises do you loose when you reach the age of 70.

Thanking you in anticipation. Derry

If you go into the search facility (top left) and put in C1 and search, you'll get a load of help. Top tip though, get in early I applied in November for C1 renewal ( January expiry date) and I'm still waiting. Others have reported longer waits. Best of luck - oh and have your wallet open for the doctor.

If you have C1 on your current licence, together with all the other “grandfather’s rights”, you will keep them all as per the back of your licence. I have just done this for the second time , coming up to 73, and everything is still there!

That may not be quite the answer you are looking for?

I applied on 24 November and got the new one 2 days ago, having rung them 2 weeks ago.

Use D4drivers, £50, much cheaper than your GP, and probably quicker.

I think you mean C1, C is for over 7,5t.
Without the medical you lose anything over 3.5t, vans up to 7.5t, minbuses etc.
If you don't have any serious problems the medical is straight forward, D4Driver charge £55 includes a basic sight test.
You don't need to send any payment to DVLA even if you need a new photo, info on the D2 form is wrong.

And, don't forget to keep copies of everything you send to DVLA and postage receipts, they are very good at losing things

I’ve literally just returned from completing a D4D medical and it couldn’t be easier, talk about a swift service, let’s hope the DVLA are as swift.

Booked online and there loads of locations to attend and had the medical a day later, with lots of other dates and locations available to suit.

While there, I met another 6 guys all getting theirs done as well, so very popular and £55 well spend.

Be sure to complete the grey areas of the D4 medical form first, as this was one part the doctor kept requesting when people arrived and it threw some, especially when asked for their doctors name and details of the practice.

Also take your passport and drivers license with you.

I went in, answered the medical questions, had my blood pressure taken and a very quick eye test. On booking, the email tells you to take along your glasses, remove any contact lenses, but when I asked he didn’t need that. I did take my Specsavers prescription just in case, but didn’t need it either. Eye test was stand on a point in the room and read the bottom line of the chart at a set distance covering up either eye, nothing stressful at all, and that was it.

The chap ahead of me went in and came out and had to wait and sit down quietly, as his blood pressure was a little high, he was then called back in for another check and that was perfect, so very thoughtful doctor.

If you do book it, the email also tells you that you must attend with a D4 form version 10/20, but the one sent by DVLA is a 2021 version and perfectly fine.

Heres the email they sent me.

Going back to the OP's original request, I think the short answer is that without a D4 medical check you would lose all categories on the back of your licence from C1 down the list, with exception of BE(car with trailer) and the lower-case letters on the last line.

The D4 medical covers all categories from C1 up, i.e. is same as HGV drivers on 'C' licence.

If you’re wanting to retain you C group then it’s just the same as you have been doing every 5 years since you went 45. Medical, fill in the forms and send off. My last C group renewal I used one of the drivers medical company’s. The supplied pre populated forms which I just sent off and my replacement C+E arrived promptly.

He says C licence. Not C1.

He does state C licence not C1.

If I remember rightly, my other half had a medical when he renewed at 70 to retain his Grandfather rights (strange term, I know). As I understand it, you will lose large vehicles over a certain weight. However, the next time my other half renewed online without a medical, we were towing a Coachman caravan with a Hyundai Santa Fe, which is actually heavier than the 3.5 ton. Have a look on the DVLA website.

Avoid using your Doc for medical. Mine never mentioned money, then, after medical exam and a week later said, you owe me £130!
I was very naive to think it was free, but not that much. Lesson learnt; always ask the price of everything before you commit.

Our doc charged £180 ,so this time used D4 drivers , £54, local and done in a few minutes but make sure you check the forms before you leave."Eyesight"and "medical".

D4 drivers is fine if no medical conditions, If anything like diabetes then you need to go the doctor route

I sent off for my second C1renewal in December 2021 got it back within 2 weeks i was very surprised, but i have lost over 2 months off my licence on my two C1's because i sent it in early as asked by the DVLA. They took my renewal date from when they got my application form which i think is a Blo--ly sauce, so instead having my C1 licence until i'm 76 i will have to re-apply when i'm 75 & 9 half months old so be careful. Good luck.

If your interested, I applied for full entitlements when i was 70 in May, had the medical and NO problems, in September DVLA rang me
(yes !) and asked if i could do 70 metres on a treadmill, i said yes, great they said and that was that.
In December they sent me a letter asking me to book an appointment at my local hospital to do a formal treadmill test. Have you tried to get a doctors appointment during Covid never mind getting a hospital appointment for a driving license.
Tried ringing the hospital for 5 days and could not even get them to answer the phones ???? whats that all about.
In January rang DVLA, on hold for an hour and was told i was being put through to the right department, i had already pressed a dozen numbers to get the right department, so the phone again is on hold, another hour later (thats two hours now) finaly get a human on the phone and i explain that i am going away shortly and cant get an appointment at the hospital and i need my license to drive, they cancelled my application and sent my plastic license back to me without any entitlements. Because of this i had to buy what i really did'nt want, a 3.5, it's a nice van but not what i wanted but at least i saved about 75k.

That is because there is a distinction between towing and large vehicles. The cut off weight with grandfather rights is 7.5T not 3.5T, so for a pre 1997 licence you could be driving a rigid at 7.5T with a trailer at 750kgs on a normal car licence (B). The combination limit at 3.5T applied from issues after Jan 2013.

Don't forget to 'Tick' the box for 'minibus' entitlement !

Can underline enough how good D4Driver are. Almost instant medical and less than half the cost of the GP (with very long wait time - and I used to be one!!!). PP Bear's post above is brilliant. I have Type 2 Diabetes but no insulin or sulphonylurea drugs which means I have to include a specific questionaire from the DVLA website but, importantly, the D4Driver medical was fine.

But those rights stop at age 70 and you have re'apply via the Medicals.

Unless the current reforms alter the position the towing rights do not stop at 70, if you already hold B+E and have no medical condition to declare it is an online renewal retaining those entitlements for the next three years. The 'large' vehicle rules are different to towing rules and take you down the path of C,C1,D,D1 etc. each invoking the medical requirements. Unfortunately the Gov.Uk website is spectaculary vague when it comes to fine detail, it tries to answer the questions it wished you had asked rather than the ones you do ask!

Get a free Eye test before the medical, I needed new glasses to pass.
