I am just starting to plan an extended trip to Canada and the USA.
The plan is to ship our van to the east coast then drive to the west on the Trans Canada highway to Port Rupert then down to Vancouver. This is where it gets tricky as we thought we would store the van, then come back the next year and proceed down the west coast to California. My only question just now is insurance and MOT continuity. How do we keep the van insured and Mot'd. My guess is that we will have to export the van? We are thinking of bringing it back when we are done, maybe three years.

Any thoughts?

It might be easier and more cost effective to buy a van over there and sell it when you're finished.
MOT I'm not sure, I had always assumed it would need to be done every year to comply with local road laws and keep insurance valid etc which would prevent extended trips.
But I follow a blog on YouTube where their MOT is well overdue with them firmly in eastern Europe. They are certain it's not a problem having investigated it, as it had been raised a number of times.
As for insurance, you'd need to speak to you company.

Hi, are there any import rules in Canada? most countries only allow 6 months before the vehicle has to be imported and any tax paid. I think it may be more cost effective to buy locally, and sell at the end of the trip. With the cost of shipping 2 ways across the Atlantic, MOT problems, insurance etc. I have friends who have bought a car and caravan in Australia, Covid excepted, they go every year for 3 to 6 months, when they get there everything is waiting for them.

If you are thinking of using a European van in Canada or the USA don't forget everything is 110 volts.
Vancouver Island is our second home and we would either rent or buy an RV over there if doing what you plan. There are strict import rules which you need to check out
Mot and insurance I have no idea as there is no Mot in Canada.
