planning a drive down the Rhine in September
Is the west or east best, with respect to views and roads (accessibility ¿)

Planning on using stellplatz if possible

Edit; and will we need the emissions sticker thingy

Some nice towns on both sides
There are ferries if you decide to swap over
Unlikely you will be anywhere you need the sticker but its only 6 euro from the Berlin site if you are under 3.5t
You will get some noise from the railways at night at most places you stop, there are rail lines on both sides and they move a lot of freight at night

We prefer the Mosel to the Rhine, much prettier, although more touristy as well.

The Rhine is very busy its a pain keep crossing because they never rebuilt the bridges we bombed  and some of the ferries are too small for motorhomes, also the Germans are very efficient at moving freight at night and they have a track both sides of the river.

Our favourite is the mosel starting at Trier, very relaxing and great with a bike. Bob.

Mosel is much nicer. Start at Trier, cross Rhine at Boppard and go south to Black Forest if you have time.

If you like being near/ on river have a look at the Neckar
We went upstream from Heidelberg and got a boat back down for the day to go around the old town and castle
Also no trains though they are handy for getting between towns on Rhine and Mosel

Hi, I am ex-pat Brit who has lived in Germany for 40 years.
Here is a tip that not many know about, which you might be interested in.

There is an aire at the top of the famous Loreley Rock on the east bank of the Rhine.
Coordinates are N50° 8.508' E007° 43.992'
It is actually the car park and costs €5 to stay the night, paid at the visitor centre.
There is no EHU, water or drainage.
During the day, the top of the rock is crawling with tourists, but they all disappear at night and then it is totally dark and the trains below can only just be heard.
You can walk down the 323 steps to the bottom of the Rock, and then about 700m along a tongue of land between a harbour and the Rhine to where the Loreley statue is.
There are also some walks among the vineyards at the top.

We don't usually stay on sites but it looked so nice we decided to call in & stay 1 night which has now turned into 3! Campingplatz Loreleyblick - showers, washing etc.. good wifi 50c for 24hrs
