HI THERE, We are hoping to drive down to Italy next April (2018) in our 7m Swift Bolero. We would love to hear from other Motorhomers who have toured Italy how they got on with the Italian Roads. Did you experience many problems with poor narrow roads, and how did you find the campsites. Your comments or suggestions would be most welcome, and any route suggestions from Calais. Many thanks.

Hi There Doreen,
Thanks for replying. We will stop off at the lakes hopefully for a couple of days and have a tour round before heading to Tuscany. We also hope to get ( if poss) to see the 5 cliff top villages on the Italian Riveria. No idea how accessible they are and where to stay as yet.

You should be fine. The roads can be rough but the autostradas are generally good and not too expensive. However, the motorways near the Italian Riviera are old, narrow and twisty in places - but infinitely better than the coast road through the towns if you want to get anywhere.

We've done a couple of trips to Italy recently.

But we have only scratched the surface so I suggest searching on here for more trip reports.

The campsites in the North of Italy are generally good but as you go south so sadly do standards at time. "Good by southern Italy standards" is a phrase you might come across. There are aires too, which we used in between sites. :)

I suspect you are referring to the Cinque Terre villages. Do not try to access them by moho! There is a railway line that links them all. We stopped at Camping Aqua Dulce in Levanto, which is a nice little Italian resort just to the North West of the villages. We then bought an all day train ticket to go to all of the villages. If you have the energy try a walk along at least one stretch of the coastal path that also links all the villages. By the way only one of them is on a cliff top. The rest are nestled in pretty little coves mainly at sea level.

Currently we are in Tuscany and haven’t spotted a single campsite! We would like to come back sometime in the MoHo and stay in the Chianti region.

Are there any links to campsites in the region.

Have seen what looks like a Laika factory not so far away.

ACSI books plus CamperContact App or any other website of your choice. There are lots. Tuscany is tourist central.
But don't forget the private sostas, many are like campsites but you won't see huge signs for them but with a satnav and a suitable app like CamperContact you will find them easily enough.:)

It’s quiet here now, but too hot so would plan to come late September poss October.

It was fairly busy in Pisa today, but I suspect that’s always the case.

Found a few sites on google maps, might fly by tomorrow

I can recommend the Dutch run site at Montecatini Alto, Camping Belsito,
https://www.campingcard.co.uk/italy/tuscany/pistoia/montecatini-terme/campsite-belsito-104776/

We arrived for one day and stayed for 9!
Both Montecatini, a Spa town in The Grand Tour tradition, and the adjacent Montecatini Alto very good to visit. Plenty of trees for shade and 2 swimming pools. None of the usual static pitches.

Between Pisa and Florence, I would recommend telephoning to check for availability and reserve.

Did a very similar tour earlier in the year - see blog in my signature, although we did go further south too.
