Some years ago, before the advent of “smart” Motorways, we were stuck on the M6 in a long, hardly moving, traffic jam.

Several cars pulled onto the hard shoulder and sped past everyone. I cursed, under my breath but, was delighted 20 minutes later, to see a long queue of cars on the hard shoulder all being booked by traffic cops who had been at the next exit slip road.

Poetic justice does happen sometimes.

Do the Dutch have hard shoulders ?
They maybe didn't understand and thought it was a running lane which, in a moment of not concentrating, would be the outside lane on their roads.

I think that would be the inside lane!
(given that the traffic is moving in a "continental" manner)

Seen similar, problem happens when the (pink) car pulls back in and the car legally overtaking you wants the same space.

They seem to manage with either side overtaking in North America. Naturally I’m not condoning hard shoulder overtakes.
