With all of the thefts of motorhomes recently I have been thinking about a post in my drive.
I have had a look on ebay and dismissed all of the bolt to the ground ones as they would not stop anyone removing them.
Then there are a large amount of cheap ground socket type with exposed locks also very easy to get past.
Has anybody come across any heavy duty ones ie 80mm x80mm 10mm wall thickness and a protected lock that would give a thief a challenge with a small angle grinder ?

One bit of advice I read AFTER (Doh!) I dug out the drive to fit our 'Drop into the ground' Post was to put it in at a 45 deg angle.

Makes it difficult for the thieving scum to drag it out of the ground.

They turned up with gas cutting gear when they pinched The nieces caravan. If they want it then there is very little that you can do to stop them.

A neighbour at my parents house had a nice sports car. It's a small town and a fairly rural area. He got someone in to dig a hole. It took several cement mixer loads to fill it with concrete for the foundation of a large security post. Late one night, a flat-bed truck turns up, attaches some chains and rips the post out, still attached to the cube of concrete. They then dragged the car up ramps on to the truck with a winch. They were gone in less then 10 mins. The police turned up 5 mins later.

I do know what you are saying but when my van is at home I am not usually far away so it may just help, also they may think that would be to much bother and look elsewhere, Here's Hopping :)

How does hopping prevent the theft of a motor vehicle ? asking for a friend......... :whistle2:

You can weld a shroud onto the post covering the lock.

Use a lock that has the pin type of shoot bolt as these rotate when locked.

The shroud needs to be hardened so senders tend to skip over the surface.

A deep hole works better for the concrete as opposed to shallow and wide with plenty of reed bar ?

I have three telescopic RAM posts across the driveway in front of my van. They are the heavy duty (reinforced) version with an internal hardened rotating sleeve designed to turn if a grinder or cutter blade contacts them and make it very difficult and time consuming to cut through them.

You'd need to dig holes about a metre deep for each bollard. It cost about a grand plus fitting for all three, although I had them put in at the same time as the drive extension was laid, so no idea what a reasonable cost for fitting would be.

It's recommended that security posts should be spaced so that there is no more than a maximum of 1.2 meters between posts, or any one post and another permanent obstacle such as a wall.

That’s all you can do just give them so many obstacles maybe they will give up ???

I think obstacles deter the opportunist thief, but if it’s on the shopping list to order it’s no problem to them.

I once bought a bolt down post from Aldi. Bolted it to the drive with rawl bolts no issues. Felt very sturdy. It was one that lifted up a little and hinged so it laid flat when you wanted to drive out. Bright yellow with a substantial lock. After a few months I forgot it was there, reversed over it, never felt it, it just bent over at the hinged locking. postion., a complete waste of time really but visually looked OK.

I guess someone was watching this happen to give such a detailed description yet did nothing.

Even if they did phone the police you’re not going to get a response in 10 minutes around here , unless it’s at sandringham

I’ve use a security post every day. It’s as tough as you wish to make it by digging a bigger hole. I’ve driven into mine, and I definitely noticed it, I’m not sure the post did though.
I went for a removable post as water table is high and I don’t want post submerged, especially the lock, also better if I have any lock problems I can swap post. You also wouldn’t want a dropping post if a gravel drive.

My drive is concrete so would bore a 10inch hole 250mm for younger folk probably a meter deep with a good socket ie bars the full depth with a shrouded lock.
If it just slows them down enough for me to take aim that will do.

Ohh and it looks tatty because I’ve been using it for 10years?

If you fitted it into a bore hole the Centinel would work well as this is the base.

There was apparently lots of shouting and swearing. They had no problems about being loud and destructive. I don't think anyone wanted to find out if they'd be violent too.

And you can dig as big/deep hole as you want and just shove metal bar in with concrete and post socket.

It could be removed with gas axe, or big grinder, but that’s going to take some kit/noise/time/planning. It also shows that you are aware of theft, so you are unlikely to not have other security devices.

Is centinentel a make just googled it but no posts called that.
Just found it Sentinel ?

I bought from NK group website that I linked to above as they sell other Land Rover stuff.

best one is to make your own say 3in box in ground about a mt with 6in sticking out of ground then a 4in box over the top with a hole through the size of a bull dog lock like this

I am not sure our camper would clear a 6 inch peg\spiggot sticking up but a good idea.
I do like that locking pin that could be used in the making of my pedal box being an auto no body makes one.
