having read all the replies thought we try a brita filter with water from our home tap and it tasted bitter (no not boddingtons) anyone got any thoughts before I take it back and go back to bottled.

At a loss, what has Boddingtons to do with a decent bitter?

On a more sensible note could you clarify the issue WRT tap/mains water or something completely different?

Edit never drink from onboard tank, use water from local tap in bottles. Tank is ok for shower, teeth and washing....NOT drinking or Tea/Coffee. (can taste plastic or something like)

Think you have to throw away the first brita filtering if I remember rightly, just recheck the instructions (y)

No you have to throw away the first two jugfulls away then your good to go still tastes crap so definitely going back.
You don't tell us where you live as this can have a huge bearing on water quality?
Also, do your neighbours have any issue's with water quality?

Flush you tank, and then fill up in another water area.

Living in the South east we have areas of hard water (limescale) and areas of soft water (ahhhh)

I make of point of never filling in a hard water area, despite both my home and where I store the MH being in a hard water zone.

I also always to drain down the tank and boiler every time the van goes back to storage, even if its only for a couple of days. Even on tour I'll drain the tank right down and then fill with fresh if I have the opportunity

I think our hard water tastes lovely but I grew up drinking it but it destroys appliances and the children now say it tastes horrible so we have a Britta water filter for when they are home. I’ve used own brands no problem as well.

We do try to fill the van up as much as possible elsewhere if the water tap isn’t too far to protect the boiler. Today we will be filling up in the welsh valleys after a lovely weekend away.

Yesterday I put a new filter in the Brita jug and the taste is almost sweet. Better than or as good as Evian bottled water.

Maybe your tastebuds are faulty, not the filter.

Did you flush the filter out first? From memory you aren't supposed to use them straightaway but you need to pass some water through them first. I may be wrong, it's decades since we used one as living in the SW now we have very drinkable water. Its the most expensive in the UK but I guess you get what you pay for. :)

People seem to go to lengths to avoid drinking tank water.

On the other hand several on here do drink it, myself included, so I wonder if any drinking from the tank have ever experienced any ill effects that can be attributed directly to that.

Answers please.

Geoff

Have drunk from the water tank on a friends boat and had a gippy stomach afterwards.
We don’t drink from the tank in the van.
We use a Britta filter to run the site water through as we like cold water from the fridge

We are a Jim’s place the difference from home is amazing put the same amount of shower gel on and so many suds use a tank of water to get rid of them

Couldn't agree more we have had it for years water board says nothing wrong with it yeah !!! they also say that the last chlorine treatment was in the lake district!!!!!

Always drink from taps in motorhome why not?

There’s a small risk that bugs have grown in the water, however the advice not to make tea and coffee is odd Boiling the water in the kettle sterilises it! Any plastic taste is only likely to be short term. Drain the tank and refill every trip. Simples. In lincolnshire water hasn’t been filtered through zillion years old chalk/limestone rocks so is as soft as it comes (and probably tastes funny to those from hard water areas!)

PS Brita filters will filter chlorine and hardness but not bugs in stagnant water. The chlorine in your tap water will help keep your On-board tank clean as well

I've lived in most regions of England over the years and stayed temporarily in various other bits of the UK and water quality differs massively.

Where I am at the moment there is so much chlorine in the water, from the smell of it you would swear you'd put bleach down the bog -- which we tend not to because we are on a septic tank.

The water companies obviously err on the safe side to ensure no pathogens survive in the water -- taste is very much a secondary consideration.

Ironically some of the best tasting water I've had from the tap actually had a brown tinge to it -- that was in Scotland.

Water quality was really brought home to me when we decided to start making cider and perry from our orchard. For starters we had to install a carbon filter into the mains supply, mainly to get rid of the chlorine, then add various chemicals to try to alter the water to make it resemble spring water.

I'm going to fit one of these 10" type over the winter. We have one at home on its own tap for our coffee.
There loads of room for one in this van behind a set of drawers.

I just Chuck tablets in.
All this talk of storage reminded me of my time with trinity house repairing machinery on lighthouses and lightships. The water on those is an unknown being topped of every month or so by a visiting tender. Never had any tummy problems with it.
In the old days the only water on remote land stations was collected rainwater

Aquasol is really good stuff. We also had a GE filter on the boat which gave amazing water.

I never used to worry about water as it was only used to make black coffee that you could stand your spoon up in and it would remove the glaze from any mug👍
As I got older I noticed more people complaining about water taste....plastic....metal....tcp....etc
Some brought water from their own home area as the water tasted awful where they were going to, I thought they were just weird 🤷‍♂️
I've been with my partner for 12 years now and she is a big tea drinker, I gave up coffee years ago, the water has moved high on the priority list because it massively alters her tea (cant drink tea myself)
In the peak district even I could smell the plasticky smell straight from the campsite tap
In cornwall it smelt like you were boiling tin foil
In wales we were getting domestos straight from the tap
I can use commercial stuff from work to clean the van tank and pipework which is non tainting and used in food industry so we ruled out the van
I always buy the 5L water bottles from tesco for her ladyship to make her tea, small price to pay for happy life, use tank water for shower and washing up......I drink orange juice or coke diluted with the odd pint of vodka 😁
