Johns 70th is in August but learnt that you can apply 3months prior for driving 3.5tons - 7.5 tons...medical done 1st June ... dvla paperwork completed and as we dont live far from Swansea took the forms in personally same day

But well done Swansea DVLA ...John received a letter today stating that he satisfies the medical team and they have issued him with his full icence with all entitlements and should arrive within 14 days

Wahoo !!!

Mine is also due for renewal in August and I have tried twice to get the ball rolling with it but my surgery says that I have to wait until they contact me and I can't initiate it myself. May I ask how much you had to pay as I have been told by the surgery that it will be anywhere between £50 and £150 depending on which doctor does it !!

Living the dream.
I've decided that having got my hgv licence back last year I'm going to renew it every year as long as I can. £57.00 for the medical with a specialist company, all paperwork done for you as well. Imo gp's are using it as a money making exercise along with flu jabs and diabetics.

Thanks for that, could you tell me how to contact a specialist other than my GP to get the medical sooner and possibly cheaper, many thanks.
Norman.

Try doctors for drivers etc. There plenty of doctors advertising on the internet. My last HGV medical cost about £40 including eye sight test. Doctor had all the forms pre populated. I just signed where shown posted it off and a couple of weeks later got my license. Do not send your old license with the forms even though it is asked for. Tick the lost license box. New ones have been coming back groups missing and without your old license you have no proof of ever having that group.

John went to the Dvla requested the correct forms ...D4 medical form , then booked his medical direct with our surgery cost £108.60

His doctor was also a qualified optician so that is sufficient as far as we know

The doctor fills in the medical form but make sure he fills it correctly as Swansea DVLA told us they return a lot incorrectly filled forms....you then fill in the Dvla licence application forms and send all off to them .. he did buy new photos but they were not required

Hope this helps ..hoping all goes well for you

John did take his passport but they did not look at it

He did try to find those doctors clinics who do the medical for £50 or so but there were none in our area...so it was our local surgery

The ones I have been told about you meet on a service area and they may have ten appointments. They have a mobile surgery and do the eye test as well. Jock @JockandRita knows of them too.

I can also thoroughly recommend Doctors on Wheels. Booked online and got the time and place convenient to me and he had all the correct forms including the eyesight test.

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Our GP surgery charge over £50 more for a 'leisure' licence medical than they do for 'occupational' ones - last time I looked at the price list over 2 years ago, it would cost him about £140. I'm not intending to look again cos when it actually needs doing, before Xmas this year, he'll just book it with Drs On Wheels.

He'll already have to invest in photos as well though, being as he's still got his paper licence! - and I dunno about his ex-wifes ancestry being half Scots, I think his is too, secretly .....
