Well I be, learn summit every day.

Last couple of times I've done Dover Calais the tunnel has only been £10 more than the Ferry. We normally use Newhaven Dieppe sometimes cheaper than Dover with the 20% discount for over 60. Also if going down the west side of France saves us 400 miles.

We have never paid more than £155 on the ferry in June Dover/Calais/Dover Cheapest economy fare, its not worth getting a flexi ticket because you can change an economy booking for £20.00

Problem with the Chunnel?. In my case getting SWMBO to use it. She has a pathological hatred of them!. even short ones have her sitting frozen!!. Yet she took to sailing no problem!.

DFDS, Dover Dunkirk. Cheap as chips if you pick your times.

Are you a Caravan & Motorhome club member? (Caravan Club) or camping club member?
Their travel clubs offers really good discounted ferry deals.
I’ve never been able to beat what fares they can offer d if you buy their travel vouchers to use against a site, the ferry fare becomes even cheaper.

We have a dog and prefer the tunnel £228 return in July , happy with that. Not happy with either the ferry or Eurotunnel charging me £38 for his journey and getting sweet F.A. for that except a 10 second check of his microchip !! BTW do use Tesco vouchers when available !!

Try getting that fact, past my wife. Many have tried over the years since it opened. Her reply is "you go that way" I will fly (or take the ferry) and join you!. This for a woman who dislikes the take off and landing phases of Flying too.

I am with her. The claustrophobic feeling of the whole journey is a non starter for me too. Not through any king of fear , but its just uncomfortable. Lots of shaking about, more than all but a few ferries I have been on. And after driving to get there, I feel like I am hurled into France, without a decent rest , a drink or food, and need to stop straight away.

For me. being 3-4 hours from the ferry, I always travel at night , leave after work and travel down when the traffic is light , late boat, eat , stretch my legs, have a beer , and chill. Dunkirk is a longer crossing , but save you 40 mins driving and has the added bonus of not being Calais. Also has a nice place to stop right in the terminal that is safe and free. We can land at 1am from a 10pm boat, be asleep within a few minutes, up at 8 and gone. If you catch and 8am boat , you need to be messing about in Dover finding somewhere to stay, you aren't landing till 10'30am at the earliest , and by the time you get any kind of distance its lunchtime. I don't recall the last time a travelled on anything other than a night or late evening ferry, because it robs you of a day .
