Door lock problems! (1 Viewer)

The door lock on my Hymer just stopped working! We cannot open it from the outside but moving the black plastic thingee we can open it from inside. Attached should be two photos I wonder if any body has any ideas of how to fix it. We at this moment in the very nice aires at Bucky France.

NO,STOPPED OFF TO DO A BIT OF SHOPPING WIFE WAS IN THE VAN ALL THE TIME, I TRIED THE DOOR AND WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE

That looks very complex just to unlock a door!

It is in the unlocked position on the inside?

No when you close the door , you can lock it with key or lock it from the inside. We are safe enough. May have to wait till we get home or find. MH dealer on our travels through France

We have the same mechanism and experienced the door not unlatching when its warm. The key lock releases the mechanism then the handles outside and in release the spring loaded latch.

Your second photo shows the door Black latch in the door open position - to test if the latch is at fault - standing outside with the door open pull the black latch back, it will move 90'. Use the internal handle to release the latch it should spring 90' to the open position as in photo 2.
Again pull the black latch 90' now try opening it using the outside handle, again the black latch should spring back to the photo 2 position.
If it doesn't the door may still be locked from the outside - If so take care dont force anything, it is possible to get things out of sequence.

So with the door open again reset the black latch as if the door was closed, using the key turn it to lock it and unlock it. The unlocked mechanism is as shown in your photos.

I can see all the springs appear to be in place.

You can't lock the mechanism unless the black latch is in the position it would be if the door was closed that is 90' to that shown in the photos.

Lastly if I haven't lost you - Assuming the mechanism is correct after unlocking and the door won't open from outside (your original Prob) push the door in and try the handle - it works for us.

Check the springs, especially the one on the black catch (right in pictures) it could be broken and that would prevent the door opening from the outside because the catch (the hooked part of it in particular) wouldn't retract enough to clear the keeper.

The spring you mention looks to be compromised anyway - the fast-nut is pushed too far down on the pin. There appears to be a witness mark on the pin that looks like it is where the fast-nut should be.

Yep, looking closer at the pictures, the spring does look broken, it's not a clean cylindrical shape.

We had a similar problem with our Eura Mobil. Internals of the lock look to be the same. The problem turned out to be the handle itself. It looks like metal but is actually metal plated plastic. The square bar you can see is actually in two parts held in sync by the handle. If the plastic splits as ours did, they turn slightly out of sync and the lock will not open. The handle eventually came off in the boss's hand.

Eura Mobil replaced the whole lock under warranty.

Make sure you both never go out without the key to the cab. If central locking is still set, you open the door from inside, go out and close it, you are scuppered. We didn't, but the repairer fitting the new lock did and it needed a locksmith to gain entry back into the van.

We too are in France. Lovely sunshine in Rugles, just South of Bernay.

I'm guessing that you're looking for a new spring. I would buy two if I were you.
Seems to be a common problem as some Dutch friends of mine had the same problem with a broken spring. Their van has two door catches and one broke while in Portugal, so not much hope of getting a replacement till they got back to Holland and had it fixed under warranty. We ended up grinding the hook part of the catch off so they could open the door. Not recommended if you only have one catch, the hook is there to stop the door swinging open if it's not shut properly when you set off down the road.

Contact Alex Stealaway. He maybe able help you. He has fixed them before. I bought a new one and gave him the broken one, which he was going to fix.

Spray the lock and key hole with WD40. Spray the door surround rubber with silicone spray.Push the door in and out slightly and simultaneously wiggle and turn the key, the door may be being held out with the door rubber surround.

Re problems with door lock, with help of another Brit we think we have found the problem. See photos it seems that the spring is ALMOST broken where the arrow is pointing . NOW where can I get one, France or wait until we get home.
