Door fly screen cord (1 Viewer)

Our door fly screen has finally snapped the last cord string (Autotrail Apache 700). It’s a stupid design, if the doors closed for any reason (usually the wind catching it - now tied back with a bungee to the cab door) then the door bin deformes the fly screen & breaks the cord. I’ve lived with one broken for years but finally another has gone so the fly screen no longer works. I’ve seen someone restring it & I’ll hunt out the utube video. Has anyone done this & what cord did you use? (& where did you get it?)

I re-strung all the cords on our flyscreen, not just the broken cords with Kevlar kite string 3 years ago.

This is the Kevlar kite string I used bought on Amazon. The 200lb one is the best size to use.

There was an article on re-stringing a Hartal flyscreen in one of the MH/caravan magazines about 4 years ago, I'll have a hunt to see if I can find it.

Fly Screen Repair

I used 0.8mm waxed twine after trying kite kelvar string which only lasted 6 months before starting to fray, it was 1mm tho so this could have caused it and it was from china so not sure of the quality, but now a year on and no sign of the 0.8...

I have used 20lb nylon fishing line. Very flexible, easily knotted to other line, should last.

Use Kevlar kite string on a Hatal door screen 10 years ago it was still OK when I sold the van 3 years later.
And used it this year to repair my front windscreen courtesy blind.

Is that the pull up one Lenny, a cord is hanging loose at one side of ours so will need to sort it once home.

I repaired ours in our last van with waxed cord bought off Ebay. The cords worked nothing like the Hartal one in above post. There were two opposing cords which had small barbed springs on the end that moved up and down the inside the sides, the barbs sprung open to hold the cord in the slot and create the tension when the door was closed, and the weight of the spring pulled it down when open. When I took it apart I drew a diagram of where the cords ran, just took a couple of goes to get the tension even on both cords.

We removed ours which had been destroyed by dogs running through and a slammed door. We fitted a walk through fly screen with magnetic central fastening. No hands needed to open and if the door slams it does no damage. Also, a narrow strip of carpet now fills the almost impossible to clean floor channel.
