John, can you explain to a mere woman WHY do you leave the outside taps open please? Won't the cold air go in and make the pipes more likely to freeze?:Sad:

It is just to allow any water that does freeze to expand unhindered.
If a tap is closed, the frozen water will still try to expand and will, in the worst cases, pop pipes or even blow the tops off taps !
