Just in case anyone is heading to Europe for the winter.
IF we Brexit in January you will need a Green Card for your trailer as well as motorhome / car to prove it's insured.
Received mine today so thought I'd set a reminder for the Snowbirds.

Do you get a copy from your car/MoHo insurer? A separate document to your vehicle's Green Card? We don't insure trailers separately.

Do you mean a trailer carnet ?. If so we used to get them from the RAC if I remember correctly. It was to stop you selling the trailer/caravan whilst abroad and had to be stamped out and in.

If we do leave we will already be in Europe so what are they going to do lock me up there must surely be a transition period so why worry about something that might never happen.?

Only applies to commercial trailers or private trailers over 3500kg which will have to be registered in their own right.
My Insurer insisted ANY trailer towed behind a motor home must have valid cover and an insurance green card if we exit on January. It's nothing to do with the weight but the insurance.
They sent mine and the motorhome registration number is declared as the tow vehicle.

They'll probably shoot us at the border.

Received 3 green cards today.
One for the car, the motorhome and the 750kgs trailer. The trailer is included in the van policy but MUST have it's own card.

Insurers should be in charge of Brexit then.... They seem to know more than the politicians do at the moment

How do your insurers know you have a 750kg trailer?
How does the card relate to that specific trailer?
The trailer will also be covered on the car policy as well if you look at the policy docs, why didn't they send one with the car as tow vehicle?

They asked the trailer make and weight so issued a card relating to that specific trailer.

Just checked my new green card and the pick up and fifth wheel are on it (y)

This advice on Gov.UK.
looking at this my Private car transporter at 1750kg gross weight does not need to be registered and is covered by my van insurance.
and they tell me I don’t need a green card, as we are still in the EU.?

You must register commercial trailers over 750kg gross weight and all trailers over 3,500kg gross weight before towing them through some European countries
  • commercial trailers over 750kg gross weight
  • non-commercial trailers over 3,500kg gross weight

That makes it that make and weight of trailer. .. Not that specific trailer.
They should have asked for the unique ID number stamped into the chassis or VIN plate.

Everyone appears to be missing the point.
The green card is to prove insurance has been taken out on the trailer. No matter if it's insured seperately or included with the vehicle it must hsve it's own green card. It doesn't matter if it weighs 209kgs or 44 tonne.
I'm only relaying the information I received from my insurer. Unfortunately I don't make the rules but only obey most of them.

I still see it as trailers
  • commercial trailers over 750kg gross weight
  • non-commercial trailers over 3,500kg gross weight
I won't have to register, insure, put on a number plate or get a green card for my m/cycle trailer.

I have to mine can weigh 3.800 ton i picked up my number plate this week although hopefully i wont need it if driving in Spain its not compulsory

Why are people concerned about Green cards as the information provided on that .gov site was for those circumstances where:

"What you will need to drive while visiting the EU if there's a no deal Bxxxx."

We have been assured many times now by Boris that he has an oven ready deal and no one knows the detail it contains.

Again, that is to register the trailer in its own right and have its OWN log book and registration number plate... Nothing to do with this green card shannanigans
Very few people can tow a private trailer over 3500kg as it must have air or electric brakes.
Overrun braking is limited to 3500kg.

That's why I said in post #9 insurers should be in charge of Brixit as they know more than politicians do.

And, in the words of Kirsty MacColl, I know he's a liar!

You do not officially need a green card until we are out of EU and even then there will be a transition period to be agreed which is an unknown so as I said earlier why worry about it??

What’s the definition of a ‘commercial trailer’ in relation to this? I have a flatbed braked trailer with gross weight 2600kgs and so lies between the 750 and 3500kg limits....I don’t use it ‘commercially’ for ‘business’ purposes so what does the commercial aspect relate to....?

If I don’t need to register it do I still need a green card and what details go on that?

I think you answered your own question.
A commercial trailer will be used for reward.
A non commercial will be for your personal private use excluding any business you may have. .
It can be the same make and model trailer but in different circumstances.

You answered your own question , if its used to carry goods for hire or reward , and also if over 3500 it has always needed to be registered (it will have a ministry number apply with form TES2) this was just not used to be displayed as a number plate as in UK we use the towing vehicles number .
