UPDATE:
The hard shoulder and one lane of the northbound section of the M5 are to be re-opened.
Police are still advising people to avoid the area due to congestion.
The southbound section will remain closed until the road is cleared and examination of the scene is completed.
The driver's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A SERIOUS accident involving an overturned lorry on the M5 between junctions 19 and 20 has closed a section of the M5.
There are long delays with traffic queueing in both directions between J19, A369 (Portishead) and J20, B3133 (Clevedon).
The lorry is believed to have overturned on the southbound side of the motorway, going through the central reservation, spilling debris and diesel onto the road.
Police said the driver of the lorry is believed to have serious head injuries and emergency services are working to free him from the lorry, which means that the southbound section may be closed for some time.
Work is underway to clear the northbound section so that section of the motorway can be reopened.
Fire crews from Avonmouth and Clevedon attended the incident at 7am and are still in attendance.
Police are urging motorists to avoid the M5 near Bristol and find alternative routes.
Road unlikely to open till tonight or even in the morning..
