The starter motor on my generator has given up the ghost after just 6 hours running time (in around 6 months). Don't use it much but in the winter when off grid for a few days (as I was in Wales a couple of weeks ago) its really useful. Can't seem to fin d a starter motor - out of stock at Dometic with no date when they will come into stock. Frustrating

If anyone knows where I might get one please let me know.

Thanks

maybe it would be easier to refurb the failed one? most towns have a specialist that the local garages use

Well, it should be a warranty replacement just hoping some Dometic dealer has one sitting on a shelf

What type of engine is fitted to it (Honda, Loncin, Briggs ?) If you can identify it, I would start looking down that route rather than rely on Dometic to sort it ?

No idea. Anyone know this? I assumed they manufactured it

ceejayt Looks like it's a Honda
Just out of curiosity, what are the symptoms, totally dead, or turns but doesn't fire up ?

Refuses to turn.

lots of messing about and a Big Bang with a hammer and it turned and started but in trying to restart wont turn. Not up for taking a hammer to it every time I want it to start !

Something come undone maybe & jamming , as we've had one for years.

This is my third on a vehicle and never had a problem before. RS have offered to take it apart and repair but as it is so new they would rather get a replacement motor under warranty. Just can’t get one and I have been in to Donetic myself and confirmed they are not in stock. Need a Honda dealer maybe

If you can confirm it is definitely a Honda GX 160 engine (there will be a sticker on the red engine cover, on the side opposite the electric generator section) then it should fit fine. If you're not mechanically minded or you don't feel it's something you could manage, take it to a garden machinery or small plant hire shop and get them to sort it. That model engine is fitted to lots of equipment, from cement mixers to go karts. The fact that Dometic doesn't have the part on the shelf is a bit lame to be honest, they could easily source one next day.

Thanks. Very helpful. When it stops p@@@@@ing down with rain will take a look

So, 4 months on and still nothing from Dometic in terms of a spare starter motor.

Have written a Private and Confidential letter to the UK MD, Sophie Que´re, complaining that a £30m turnover company cannot supply a simple spare part and demanding a replacement generator given that the previous one only had 6 hours running time before it failed.

Had to come home early from New Years Eve celebrations as not enough power - could have run the engine for an hour but decided to just call it quits - had a good last evening in the car park at Sealife centre Scarborough - free parking and quite a few motorhomes there last night.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the update (y)

What I can say is that I am hopping mad and the letter doesn't pull any punches - should practically combust when she opens it (not really - no terror police please ?)

The amount of money we all spend on Dometic products every year - fridges etc you name it and they can't keep a simple stock of spares. Have threatened to ask RS too remove the generator so that I can wheel it onto their stand in Manchester with a sign on it saying "quite good generators but don't expect any after sales service"

Had a problem with a company years ago, I wasn't getting any where, so I drafted yet another letter (2 copies) got out about 5ish so no one would be in their office & faxed it trough one copy after the other so many times I lost count how many. :p
Had a phone call that day & resolved (y)

Dometic just phoned me!

very apologetic, no spares till February so they are trying to find a generator to cannibalise for a starter motor. They will keep me informed and are trying really hard they say.

Told them I appreciated the belated effort and thanked them but also reiterated how poor it is that it should come to this.

Spare part arrived Monday last week and was fitted by RS Motorhomes on Tuesday. It wasn't a new starter motor so cannibalised from elsewhere but at least it works. I got another phone call from Dometic on Wednesday apologising again.

They obviously have problems with spares for these generators but I am pleased I am all fixed.
