As per title,

I've managed to blow the main fuse on the van.

Question. Is this a Caravan/Motorhome specific item or will an Electrical Wholesalers sell them?
Photo along in a minute (Optimistically he said).

Unlucky Derek. :(

I got mine from an auto electrical supplier, for the installation of my Battery to Battery charger. I'm sure a Motor Factor may also be a source. What amperage should the blade fuse be?

I doubt you'll get them a an Electrical Wholesalers, ie, 12/24v specific.

Good luck sorting it,

Jock. :)

Thanks Happy with that. We're lucky to have one in our town.

Funny that. I blew the bl&&dy thing taking out a Battery to Battery. My fault. Schoolchild error (can't blame schoolBOYS these days)
At the mo. I don't know the amperage.

(y)

Do you know what capacity blade fuse you will need Derek, ie, 50A +/- ?

BTW, can I ask what caused it to blow in the first place? ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

If you can't find the capacity go for the lowest rated one that fit's
They are there to protect the battery and unless there is a short there shouldn't be much load on them
I'm assuming you shorted out the battery somewhere in the circuit
Auto factors should have them

Back again,

As said, schoolchild error. Removing a cable and 'forgot' I had only disconnected at one end. The live end managed to earth to the seat base.

The motor factors didn't have, but could order. They suggested a local hardware Arkwrights but they didn't have (don't laugh, this Hardware shop sells everything from a screw to a wedding dress. I jest not.)
I then went to 'my garage' as they gave me a right bo!!ocking for not going to them in the past when I needed a lamp.
They didn't have one so it was back to the Factors who have one on order for me and it will be here on Monday. No dramas.

A car audio specialist will have them.
Deaf kids fitting 1500watt speakers and amplifiers need them.

John,

Too damn right I did! (See above)

It is to protect the cables not the battery.

Looks like a midi fuse.

I can't be sure from the photo as no scale, but it looks like a midi fuse. Normally they have plastic around that has the rating on. Like:

50 AMP RED MIDI FUSE HIGH QUALITY CAR MARINE VAN LEISURE AUTO STRIP FUSE | eBay

Thankyou. 'Our' fuse didn't have the plastic so I've assumed 50amps. Prior to going out shopping I did send a message off to someone off EBay because like you have found, there was no scale on the photo but the lady at the factors knew what was needed.
EBay £1.60 Factors £1.09 Win Win.

The battery is likely to go bang before the cables melt
Splitting hairs anyway the fuse was there and did what it was designed for so all good :giggle:

Nope, a dead short on the battery is capable of hundreds of amps burst, well beyond the cable can carry. It will melt 2” of 35mm2 copper within a split of a second. Please don’t try it. Fuse is there to protect the cable as Lenny said. Not the battery.

12v planet sell midi’s and are fast delivery.

Looks like a Strip Link Fuse. They come in various values from 30 to 100A. I think the fuseholder will take a Midi fuse instead. You'd have to look at what the cable is supplying to work out the amps value. I'd guess 50A if it's supplying standard habitation stuff.
The fuseholder looks like one of these:

TBH I would have ordered two.
(Then you'll never need the spare ;) ).

always carry a full st of fuses including the special ones

He meant a gearbox, just the box folded up. The gear is left at home cos it’s heavy.

When I had a smallholding in West Cornwall I needed a pair of gate hinges. The ironmonger only had one hinge so said he'd order another one as: "This one's been on the shelf for ages but there's no call for 'em".
I didn't bother to enlighten him that it was probably because there isn't much call for just one hinge.

Get a 12V circuit breaker instead of a fuse. They come in a variety af amperages and it can be reset in seconds should you trip it out. Google 12V circuit breakers.

Finale to this.
Collected the fuse today

I can sleep easy for ever. Spriddler said 'Get two'. The blister pack contained two fuses so it will NEVER??? blow again.
(until I earth a live cable)

Ordinarily I would have done that But there a very good reason that I won't.
