The trouble is dog owners don't notice the smell themselves. That aside to offer the van for sale with dog hairs all over it makes you wonder what state the rest of the van is in all the areas you don't notice on a first inspection.
I always 'dog proof' our MHs/campers making covers for everything to keep the original stuff nice but mainly so we don't have to worry about the dogs getting muddy paws on stuff. Our dogs never therefore 'touch' the actual upholstery in any way.

When we change MHs we always go through our existing one cleaning like mad to ensure it is as good as it can possibly be and the dealers don't have to lift a finger to get them in 'showroom condition' (not that we don't keep it clean anyway), there may be an odd dog hair lurking as it's impossible to get rid of them all but nothing like some you see. Ours have never smelt at all, honestly they haven't, as we can't stand the 'dog' smell ourselves so no way would I have a vehicle, or home that did.

When we were selling our home and had viewings we always made a point of asking the agents afterwards if there had been any comments regarding a 'doggy' smell, there were none ... most didn't even know we had dogs unless they spotted them in the MH/camper!

A doggy smell usually means that the covers etc need a good wash, not just a 'spray' with something or a 'bomb', this includes the seats, armrest and any other soft material in the vehicle (curtains, wall/door panelling), depending on the item it can either be done in situ or stuck in a washing machine but just using something like the 'sprays' etc won't work long term as they just mask it. The one thing I would NEVER touch though is a vehicle that has been smoked in as that permeates well into the foam and everything else and is extremely difficult to get rid of permanently.

We worked in a load of council flats once putting AC systems in used for heating. Anyway stepped into a flat 8am one morning and the dog stench nearly knocked my block off! I'll never forget those 2 footsteps into the green oblivion 🤢🤮. The owner (I presume) couldn't smell it at all. Kept saying "these are great dogs these" flipping bath them then! 🙄

Can’t fault the dealer really he valets them when sold, the wife found the dog hairs after ramming her hand down the passenger seat as she reckons most are lap dogs and that’s where they sit after that she was on a mission there aren’t too many thank goodness. We mentioned it and he said it’ll get a wet clean and will be spotless so we’ll see, he’ll have her to deal with so I’ll put an update on when we get it.
Let us know what ward he's in (y)

One of the worst things for dog smell is heat ... if a place is kept too warm the dog's don't like it so sweat more thus creating the smell.

I used to work for Hoover servicing washing machines and vacuum cleaners. As soon as I got near the cleaner I knew that they had a dog. If you look at the brush roller you can scrape the dogs body fat off it. Then spray with WD40 clean the plastic with it as well.

It’s a lovely clean, very well looked after van but the hairs were well down in the seat. I’m sure it won’t take much cleaning and I do like the idea of the dealer only cleaning once it’s sold, at least we know it’s at its worst and it doesn’t frighten us. Worst case scenario we’re off to Regal asap.

Had a Nissan Pathfinder, bought second hand from a dealer. Nothing would shift the stench of the previous owner's pooch(es) when the interior got warm. I tried everything. I bought in the the winter and didn't notice at the test drive. It seems dealers have a spray they use to make cars smell like new. Ended up trading it in.

Now you all know that I am extremely dog friendly and have 3 in my motorhome. I hate dirty dog smells though so spend time thoroughly vacuuming and cleaning to remove stray hairs. The smell comes from the oil in their coats, not sweat or bad breath or even farts (which stink). The only way to remove such smells it to use steam to dissolve the oils and then suck them out of soft furnishings or carpets.

Avoid it by keeping your dogs clean and clipped if needed and covering any fabric surfaces they come in contact with.

If a van is stinking that bad, a specialist valeter will do the job well but at a price, as it may mean taking the cab seats out to clean. You can clean most of it up by taking out the seat cushions and taking the covers off for a wash with BIO liquid. a thorough vacuum and mop of the hard floor and inside the lockers helps too. But any fixed fabric will retain the oils unless cleaned properly

One of my neighbours was a crime scene cleaner and recommended a bio cleaner for hard surfaces, but I don't recall the brand, but good stuff for dirty hand prints on steering wheels etc. Spray on, leave a few seconds to dissolve the oils and it wipes off clean

Our dog`s, over a period of 50years I guess, have never been allowed on beds or on furniture, in fact not in Bedrooms. The current one has her own things, beds etc;. I have caught her on the front seat of the `van, it apears she gets up to look out, but as we don`t leave her often. it`s very rare. At home I can see where she is on the Security camera`s.

40 years ago, Granada Ghia, under a year old, fully loaded top of the range estate. Went fishing at Dungeness with brother inlaw, could only get frozen bait for some reason. Packed up, got to car, keys locked inside, brick through quarterlight, get in drive home and park on drive (sloping). left the fishing gear in car as pissed off and needed beer. Bait thaws out and supurates into the back of the hinged back seat. Now thats what you call a stink! It pretty much wrote the car off as far as I was concearned so phoned a dealer agreed a ( crap actually) price over phone subject to him seeing it, drove there with sunroof and all windows open he took a cursory look, did the paperwork and off I went. Phew!
Wierd thing though, we tiled his whole house many years later and I am still not sure he didn't recognise me.

Give me a dog smell anyday.

Dakota car bomb in the post, lemon and lime 😋 plus wet clean from dealer 😃. Happy wife, happy life!
Place it on a rubber mat or piece of cardboard in the middle of the van and start it. After a short while, run the engine and the air con for a while to let it do its work thru the system.
Preferably do it late afternoon and leave it overnight. Simples!

Yep find a different van, love dogs but can’t stand smell I hate seeing photos of Dogs all over seats with no covers on. Dogs n motor homes are hand in glove unfortunately.

Couldn't agree more.

Our dog stays on the floor or only allowed on my/swmbo lap.
Carried on from home, never allowed on settees or even upstairs 😊

Broken most bits now
We had a Fiat 500 station car and took out the whole interior, cleaned all the internal plastic parts and surfaces with tough chemicals, jet washed the seats and carpets with every product known to man - tiny improvement. Changed the whole interior to try and get rid of the dog smell until finally giving up when I realised that the heater matrix behind the dashboard was also infected, traded it in in the end.

Ours don't go on seats and rarely on laps, have you seen the size of them.

Own up how many of you have just been and checked the cleaner?😂😂😂
Nope, I sorted cleared ours the other day as hubby had well and truly got loads of stuff tangled round the roller so it didn't go round (not doggy related!) and there wasn't any 'oil/fat' on it at all and no smell.

But its true,,,Never noticed it when we had dogs but can smell dog aroma in a house or car ,,you cant hide it..BUSBY.
I can tell as soon as I go anywhere if there's a dog as I have a very sensitive nose, no way would I have a smell in my house as it would drive me nuts, never mind anyone else. There's no excuse for having a 'smelly' house, be it from a dog, child, adult ... other creature ... if you have then you need to look at your cleaning regime and why the smell is there in the first place - I'm not someone who cleans all the time and has a spotless home but it certainly doesn't smell.

All this talk of Dog smells is one reason I will not have one (or more).
Not all dog's smell (well, farts excepted!) and our home doesn't ... the ONLY thing we have to deal with is dog hair, not a massive problem, but obviously unless you get bald dogs or those that don't shed you can't avoid it.

I thought our house didn't smell of dog when we had one or more..Later friends told be differently.Cannot see how you can stop it You just don't notice because your used to it.I lend a neighbour my car and he never smokes in it but I can smell cigarette even if he only uses it for 10 mins. Never would have done when I smoked.BUSBY
