Hi all,

Me and the wife have just paid a deposit on a Rottweiler pup, now we have had animals all our lives and we miss having a dog about the house but........

When we go away on the MoHo I have noticed quite a few sites says dogs allowed then state not dogs on the dangerous dog list so it contradicts itself.

Any advice as our pet will be just that a pet and the problem I see it’s not the dog that has issues but those that bring them up wrong.

Regards.

Ironically we bought an MH because we have dogs and couldn’t bare leaving them with dog sitters any more . Feel for your plight though

It's the country that bans certain breeds, I know Spain, France and Italy have a ban on Rottweilers but it's pretty easy to use google to find out what you need to know. Perhaps you should consider a different breed, so you can travel freely with your pet.

Dangerous Dogs Act 1991; section 1 identifies 4 breeds that are “banned” (presume this is what you mean by the dangerous dogs list) and the Rottweiler isn’t one of them, so enjoy!
We love the way we can take our dog with us everywhere in the MoHo. He’s currently enjoying the cold in Austria, but didn’t enjoy the heat of Spain quite so much!
But there are country specific restrictions; such as Spain won’t allow anything larger than a handbag dog on public transport, German restaurants are happy to let the dog in, but not in bakeries, Austrian public transport insist he’s muzzled; we just work around it, he’s one of the family.

Are rotties on the list?
From my experience, in the UK no one asks what type of dog it is when you book and as long as they are well behaved, no dramas.
I did have a campsite receptionist asking what type of dogs I had in Italy after admitting to having 2. She didnt have a clue what I was talking about when I said "Ridgeback" she asked to see their passports, no pictures, still no idea so decided to come out and see them, I couldn't resist, just opened the door for them to come out and see her. Scared the life out of her when they leapt out but she soon saw they were just nosey and friendly. ??

Google says

According to the United Kingdom Dangerous Dogs Act there are four specific types of dog that are considered to be specially controlled dogs, these are:
  • Pit Bull Terrier.
  • Japanese Tosa.
  • Dogo Argentino.
  • Fila Brasileiro.

"google" says Rotties are on the list in Spain and should be muzzled in public.

France don't like any "proper dog" they prefer little snappers you can carry them everywhere and just pop them down onto the pavement to poo ;)

That is so true! Their dogs are generally yappy, snappy and small. And you're so right about the poo.

I’m going by what’s written up on pitch up site not looked on other sites.

I have used a few sites that state this hence the question.

Pitch up says “The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa” for example.

Jim perhaps that’s another article for the mag Dogs and sites etc.

well here is a story about a dog "on the list"

we used to be very involved in dog rescue and were on speed dial for the local police station. this one particular day we were asked to come in and assess a dog brought in when it's drug dealing owner was locked up.
we arrived at the station to find the lovely lady who controlled the cctv in the town throwing a ball for this lovely jowly dog who was running round the front grass wagging his tail. She was cuddling and kissing him and he was lapping up the attention.
the officer that had called us said, he is a nice dog and I take it some kind of staffie cross by the look of him. both were shocked when we pointed out he was likely a pedigree american pit bull.
the woman who was previously playing ball was scared she had been associating with a "dangerous dog" and on questioning thought he was a boxer cross. we went on to explain in detail just how it is bad owners not bad dogs that lead to the dangerous dogs act. And asked her if that so called "dangerous dog" had frightened her or just the thought of it? did she enjoy playing with the dog and had he shown any aggression? we change the world one person and one dog at a time.
sadly the dog went back to the drug dealer for a few months, but we did ensure he was re-homed when the owner went to prison and his friends and family wouldn't take him. the dog went on to live a nice life with an older experienced couple and never so much as growled at anyone when with them

just because a dog breed is "on the list" doesn't make them a dangerous or bad dog.

That's so true ^.

However, the fact remains that there is a list of banned dogs.

Some sites in France ban Rottweilers. I also have a recollection that you have to notify someone official that you have one with you when you travel and someone has already mentioned the muzzle issue.

Not an issue in the UK certainly.

Took the Wife years to persuade me to get one, I hate dog hair and smelly dogs. However I wouldn’t be without her now.

I always pick up her poop though, even in the French Alps where it seems everyone else prefers to desiccate theirs on the floor.

Whilst researching places to stay in Spain have come across a couple that limit dogs to no more than 10kg - our Westie is (supposed to be) 10kg so no problems for us but a Rottie would be.

I think it just comes down to individual places who decide what they will or won't allow.

Looks like before we book any site I’ll have to ask the question which is a shame on those that don’t know how loving the breed is and it’s bad owners and bad press that give them a ban name.

Pics of the pups and mother below.

judging by the condition of the mum, you are getting a gorgeous pup. if it grows up half as nice as the mum you will of done well

They have a true bloodline going back years and not cheap.

We used to have 3 English bull terriers and a collie cross. We’ve now an Italian greyhound and a mini wired Daxie Never refused access to a site. Some will charge, some will be excessive charges, I assume these site don’t really want your dog or are taking the pi**. Unless it’s a Site I really want to go to I won’t use those sites. I also think the main point is to have your dog/s under control and take measures to prevent excessive barking and certainly clean up after them. I’ve not known rotties being on banned list In U.K. how exciting for you, getting all the paraphernalia that puppies need. We even take the cat!

Yeh can’t wait the pups are only 8 days old so 8 weeks is years away for my misses.

I‘ll call the site itself before booking and if they so no it’s their loss not mine, these dogs are loyal and train very well and it’s bed owners not the animals that give them a bad name.

Regard

My neighbours Rottie (aka Jakey) endangers my ears every time I give him a cuddle over the garden wall. Could do with a tongue restraint too.

They look gorgeous ❤️
I think if you stick to the UK I don’t think you will have a problem.

I use the Haven sites now and again out of season as they are excellent value for the money.
When you pop the number of dogs going with you in the box this comes up

Please note:
The following dogs are not accepted on park:
Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro & Japanese Tosa.

So Rot'y is welcome, well done Haven

They are one of my favorite dogs, very lovable.

The pic's of the pups (and parents) are great, I look forward to seeing more as they grow.

Cheers
Colin
