Ahem.

I fitted a rear view camera on the back of the van attached to screen on the mirror. Nothing fancy, just eBay stuff. I like cameras, lots of them.

When it’s raining and I’m driving it’s like looking through French Onion Soup, presumably from the spray that lands on the lens.

Anyone got a good make/design of camera or hood/enclosure that is good with soup?

Depending on the type of camera you could fit one of these. I have one on the rear facing camera on my Chausson and it reduces the road spray significantly.

When I put the rear view camera on our PVCs I mounted it under the bumper inside a little plastic 'box' (with drilled holes to let any water out) which surprising kept it clear all the time despite its location:

Wow. I’m amazed, given the position. Mine is fixed about a foot from the top of the van where I thought spray landing would be less of an issue…

Originally it was put there as my hubby decided he wanted it putting on just before the inaugural trip in our new Globecar (June 2015), it was only meant to be a temporary fix as I intended to put it up near the top brake light (where I'd fitted in on our previous PVC) when we got back, however it worked so well under the bumper it stayed there and when we got our next one it went under the bumper too and stayed there and AFAIK the new owners are still using it in that position.

I think some of the spray is actually off the roof and swirls/curls downwards thus landing on high mounted cameras, certainly the one we had high up got a lot grubbier than the one under the bumper.

There you go folks, another good use to your old sardine cans!.(y):giggle:
Well done Minxy!:giggle:

Our twin lens rear view camera is up top at the back, yes it gets steamed up, every time, it needs wiper blades, can you sort some out please Minxy?:giggle:

you need to do a little digging for a video showing the vortices at the back of a lorry. The same shape profile as most motorhomes. These spinning air currents hold water spraying off the roof directly behind the vehicle, exactly where many cameras are fitted

Ours in winter is next to useless due to spray.

Unless the lens is hidden until reverse is selected, I don’t think much can help.

Ours cannot be moved now so easily, but like others I bet, I have been trying to think of a DIY method to stop water build on the lenses.
TheBig1 seems to have hit the nail on the head with the vortice theory, I have even seen camera footage showing the benefit of fitting those wind deflectors up the sides & along the roof of a motorhome to help it be more stable on motorways when vehicles pass at higher speeds.
Time to put the thinking heads together, its such a common issue, I am sure it will become clear, when someone comes up with a simple solution.:giggle:

I often see lorries with a short length of string or material fastened to their large rear view mirrors. The string/material flaps about in the wind and keeps the mirror clear of rain drops. Maybe something similar fastened to your camera might do the trick?

What's weird is we have a fitted one which gets really bad spray even though it is at the top of the van

We also have a Double camera (Du Du Bell Mirror camera) that records and that is fixed about 3 foot from the ground and that rarely gets spray whilst we are driving in the rain you can see it just next to the 17 sticker

It's plastic! I haven't a clue what it was originally as I got it from a car boot sale as it was included with some other bits I bought, did the trick though.

You could try adapting a pair of these ... use one side and keep the other as a spare or flog it to another funster!

The challenge is the large low pressure area that forms close behind the motorhome that "sucks" spray in. A small air scoop on the roof drawing air into this area helps but would increase drag.
