Hi,

Trying to pick a few brains here - I am interested in a Mercedes based Hymer s510 with a Mercedes 2.9 engine in, the van was registered in 1998, would that be likely to be the turbo version of the engine?

I have searched the forums and gather that the earlier versions were non turbo and very slow, I don't want to drive like a boy racer but there are times when holding your own on the motorways would be desirable. Any ideas what sort of mpg I would expect from the unit?

Is it a UK RHD model
I only know that in 2003 it was with a turbo
Some later engines (that could be 1998) had direct injection .
But not all.
I only know this from what I have found on the net.
So someone will know more about it

Hi @Mel - that kind of echoes what I have found; earlier definitely non-turbo, later definitely turbo, but in the middle...? I had a non-turbo diesel and it was gutless and thirsty. I think the merc would be better, but I would prefer a turbo.

It's a LHD, presumably imported at some stage. It's a bit of a shed tbqh but mechanically should be good (Merc service history) and I think I can get it for a price which allows some refurbishment.

Also, anyone know whether this model would have ABS?

If its LHD there is always the chance its turbo.
From what i can find.
There are so many Hymer experts on here I am amazed no one has given you the answer.

What is an OMG?
Apart from Oh My God!!!

:cooler:

Apart from "Oh My God" I have no idea.

I have had "Oh My God"s before, but this one has a Mercedes service history and so should be ok.

Other half's car is 1996 Mercedes turbo diesel (c250); love it to bits.

Yes this vehicle definitely has a turbo. If I was you I'd also consider a Sprinter with the 2.7 turbo diesel. Its a gem of an engine. There are also various power outputs from the 2.2 turbo diesel all the way up to about 150bhp & these engines are really frugal on diesel.

Hi @Bacchus - I am new to motorhomes so have little to compare it to apart from my car. Even with a Turbo I would still describe it as a slow and steady chugger.

However with that said its plenty fast enough for the chassis. It is superb up hills a real joy with the auto box - on our trip to Cornwall we drove up between Watergate bay and Newquay many times and it pulled hard accelerating from near stationary - not having a clutch that may burn out too is reassuring.

MPG - not done too many miles yet....its somewhere between 25 - 28 I would think but don't hold me to that.

Top speed - it will go to 70 for sure ....and maybe beyond, no ABS as far as I am aware. I find the chassis is more comfortable at 60 to be honest, maybe I just need a bit more confidence in brakes and driving something significantly heavier than my car.......but 60 is maximum I choose to drive at view of stopping distances - cruise on, stereo up, armrests down and smile :)
