Having read the other threads about returning to the UK and the need to quarantine for 14 days, I may have missed it but...

If I arrive back in the UK on day 1, get a COVID 19 test on day 2 and then receive a negative result on day 3, does that then end my need to quarantine? If not, why not?

Thoughts please.

cant substantiate this but IMHO "NO" the reason for Q14 is that it can take that long for the virus to show itself. but apparently it usual to show around 5 days.

No, not at the moment.
Similar to if you have been close contact traced.
Due to the incubation period and the infective period, you remain self isolating for the full period even if you test negative.
**Unless the rules change

As far as I was aware, you need to be showing some symptoms to be able to have a test, it is not available for everyone

I'd expect there is an incubation period before reliable symptoms so a negative result after a test on day 2 is unlikely to suffice to end quarantine.

I take your point, but change my initial scenario to a test on day 6 or day 10 then, a negative test at some point during the quarantine period should end it surely.

You're thinking logically, which is admirable, but there's no logic to the quarantine decisions.

There is nothing in the quarantine rules that allow it.

As above.

Thanks for your replies, having looked into it a bit further you are right.

"If you are tested and receive a negative result for coronavirus, you must continue to self-isolate until you have been in the UK for 14 days, even if your symptoms have gone."

That's what the official site says.

Having done a home swab test for Covid I am not convinced about the accuracy of the test and suspect there will be a lot of false negatives. It is extremely difficult to take the swab sample correctly.

Definitely not I’m afraid because the incubation period is still thought to be up to 14 days, even if you are asymptomatic.

You don’t need to be showing symptoms to do a test.....you just need to say you have them to book one.

I’ve had 3 now due to the line of work.

The BIG question?. How many WILL actually Quarantine?. Going by the film of Police checking Bars in Manchester? on this mornings news. Even getting people to "social distance" is an impossible task. Eating up Police time and giving the Criminals a break.

I dare say as with everything else, some people will follow the rules completely and stay home for the full 14 days regardless and others will be out the next day shopping and at the pub even if they feel ill :(

All this is irrelevant though isn't it in the real world, why do you have to quarantine if you are coming from France, even though you may have never been anywhere near a corvid and yet you can travel to, say, Leicester, or Oldham get out and have a wander and go home again or even get paid to go to pubs and mix with anyone without any such things. :Eeek:

As someone said, more years ago than I care to remember. "you cannot legislate for the loonies". And sadly now all the old `bins are closed, which is a shame they could all have been sent there! to keep infecting each other.
