I have been getting in a right pickle the last few days trying to get a couple of electrical problems sorted on my new Hymer. Having bought from a dealer 200+ miles away I really have to sort things out myself and ask the dealers for reimbursement of the costs (Becks have been brilliant and agreed to this) but both problems relate to dealer fitted extras.

Firstly the radio doesn't work. No reception other than a couple of strong local stations. Simple I thought, the aerial booster fitted by Hymer hasn't been connected, but Becks insist there is no need for this and so I went to Halfords and bought a new radio thinking the original must be faulty. Wrong! Halfords have refused to fit it as they say the original vehicle wiring has been messed with, the radio in there now is NOT faulty and works fine and my problem all relates to the aerial booster not being wired in. They won't touch the aerial though (don't do aerials sir) so I went to our local Motorhome repair company. They won't touch it either (Fiat electrics are far too complicated) so I am still at square one. I need someone to take the radio out (it's not been fitted in properly either) wire up the aerial properly and refit it so it works.

I also have a problem with the twin lens reversing camera. It seems either it has been fitted with the cameras wired the wrong way round (there is a microphone in one and it's not working ) or the system has a fault (no sound). Again Becks have said they are happy to pay the cost if I have the work done locally but does anyone know a company near me in Gloucestershire who might help? Alternatively I could spend a few days in Norfolk whilst Becks do the work.......

http://www.motorhomemedics.co.uk/ seem pretty good, they did work on the American Motorhomes we've had in the past (not actually for us, but before we bought them). They clearly specialise in US motorhomes, I'm not sure whether they also look at UK/European motorhomes.

Ahh yes glad you reminded me.

Try Motor Mods on the Evesham Road at Gotherington Cross behind the filling station.

Edit should have said they helped me out with a lot of info about a car alarm and knew they had nothing to gain other than a possible future client.

Tried them (they are in Tewkesbury now), but they wouldn't do the radio as the Fiat electrics are too complex. Happy to do the rear view camera though.

Becks usually get all their radios supplied and fitted by a company called Peter Doidge in Great Yarmouth. Try giving them a ring and see if they can help with some advice on what has gone wrong. They may also have fitted the reversing camera too.

I would also suggest you contact Motor Mods and see if they can help. They have been in business since 1978 and advertise motorhome accessories on their website.

I'll pop along to Motor Mods tomorrow. Thanks everyone. I knew that even with a great dealer I would have problems distance buying a new van!

best of luck,

I must say I would be taking the 2 day trip back to Becks if it were me, can see much sucking of breath by a different fitter followed by two different opinions o_O

Or is it only me that happens to :)

I would do the same David, get the original fitters and suppliers to sort your issues, worth half a tank of fuel all day long

I may possibly end up doing that but I will try the local route first as Becks are happy to pay the cost. I doubt if they would pay for my fuel and camp site fees as well!

Might be worth an ask considering they’ve messed the electrics up on a dealer fit item, it’s not like vehicle warranty work this is something they’ve done, you sorting it yourself is an easy way out for them

Only minor things thanks Christian. Still delighted with the van, it's the best layout for our needs. Hope you're enjoying yours!

As others have said, I'd make a holiday out of it and let Becks do the job.
If you do and we are around you're welcome to overnight at our place with all facilities and an hour from Becks.... you will be able to introduce your moho to it's twin!

Great to hear and fingers crossed you get the minor issues resolved quickly.

We are loving our Carthago thank you but likewise, a couple of minor issues to be addressed but certainly not stopping us enjoying it.

New radio bought from Motor Mods (lovely people and Mrs Bass used to teach one of the bosses kids!) and they have said they would resolve all of the problems, real or imagined with the powered aerial. Thanks for the suggestion.

I managed to switch over the camera feeds to see if they had been installed the wrong way round but no joy. Vision Plus say the unit must be faulty so Steve at Becks has reserved a new one to fit when I have the first years service done next June (when we can arrange a weeks holiday in Norfolk at the same time). Becks have also said they would refund something towards the new radio so I think it's an honourable solution and am happy. I didn't like the radio much anyway!

Thanks for the kind offer Brian! Similarly if you ever want a holiday in the Cotswolds (well you can see them from our drive!) just let me know.

Hi Bob, strange you should say that 'cos we are in the Cotswolds right now for a few days ... currently on a site at Charlbury to be close to my cousin who is over from the U.S. and is renting a cottage here.
Thanks for the offer and hope to take up sometime.

Update to my radio problem.

MotorMods came yesterday and fitted the new radio, but after their chap had left I tried out the non DAB bands and just got a message saying no reception! I spoke to them on the phone and they were upset that the fitter had only checked the DAB reception and a different chap came out today. He first of all fitted a switch so the radio didn't have to go through the ignition then found another aerial lead (the chap who came yesterday had found two) hidden in the dash, connected it up with power and bingo! Perfect reception. This means that Hymer provided two aerial leads and boosters, one cut off aerial lead which presumably had been a Fiat fitting but cut off as it was redundant and a third, tv lead and booster. No wonder Becks were confused! I should have said that the two Hymer leads were for DAB and non DAB reception...

Thanks for the MotorMods recommendations, they were superb and very reasonably priced. No charge for today's work, and the chap who came yesterday was apparently a new employee so I will be gentle on him for missing the hidden lead!
