Just starting out..
Well, it seems to have done the job, with another 1000 miles up since fitting, and the needle staying resolutely mid gauge once the engine is warmed up. Happy to share the knowledge & tools (22mm deep socket) if anyone else encounters this gremlin.

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Nice job & well done, however if the problem surfaces again it might well be your radiator which is blocked & no amount of back flushing will clear it.
I've had similar problems on Land Rovers over the years, the problem only surfaced in hot weather when towing.

Dave Newell's suggestion is interesting.
