Doc on tour, France, Spain, Morroco.

Was brought up that if you can't afford to pay cash don't buy
That's why my credit rating isn't valid
I only use credit card as it saves having to exchange currency usually. I've no debts though. And pay no interest

It’s not bad, just slightly better at the cashpoint ime.
The difference is pennies really at the end of the day though.

Paul
While we're on money, I can't remember whether Carlos takes cards? Also how much is he charging this year. We did AML last time and happy to use it again

Cash only , 230 euro for single person 270 for 2 . He does exchange 10dh to 1 euro

Just a thought, have you checked the pipe to the servo is ok? Wouldnt cause a soft pedal but might be why so much effort is involved.
Yeah it looks all good .. no effort on pedal usually its a very light pedal.

Carlos takes card now, since the son in law has taken over most of the running of it now he's brought it into the 21st century
Carlos is old school 🤣
Wouldn't take card when we went . I tried but he said cash only.

Bleeding insurance at port was the same

That's weird he took card of me last year... 🤔
Yes I could have sworn I paid by card last time , same with insurance at port because you'll remember you withdrew cash for me at Gibraltar and I transferred it back to you.

So this time I took cash because I need it to pay painter's in tafroute...I always prefer paying by card when I can. But between Carlos then insurance I'd spent nearly 500 euro of my cash.

And I think it was Carlos son that served me.

P.s he's in a different building now too than the last time I went , it's bigger and more modern about 2 doors along from where he was last time. Not sure if that's recent or not as it was 2 years ago I was last there

That's one of the things I dislike with morroco and Turkey was similar . As was Albania

They still deal in cash more than cards , must be a tax dodge or something

It's too much faffing about.

I remember my first trip to Europe in early 90's and needing to change currency between France Belgium Germany and Netherlands it was a right pita

So glad it's the euro now. I'd happily adopt the euro in the UK too . I can't be arsed with the currency exchange

What insurance are you on about? The vehicle & driver insurance?
Aye the 3rd party insurance for the van on morroco.

1 month €97
3 months €200

I wanted 2 months .. they don't do 2 months conveniently.

And it's worthless really . Gives me no protection whatsoever.

Didn't bother getting it for the scooter as it was the same price.

My scooter is in far better condition than any of the ones I've seen here lol and most of the ones here have no numer plates.

I've not used it in morroco yet anyway. I might use it in Tafraoute as I'll be there a while.

The Morrocans really are very scared of dogs , and equally the stray dogs seem to act differently towards the Morrocans. I noticed this last time too , they barked more at the Morrocans than they did the folk in the campers etc.

Sitting here people watching , two morrocan men walking down road and this black stray dog barking like mad at them ...they stop in their tracks scared to walk past .
The woman from the German camper nearby walks over to the dog says hey hey hey and literally pushes it away from the two men without a second thought.

I've never encountered an aggressive dog to me either. They're always super friendly . The occasional one will bark at my dogs and be a little wary especially females with pups but otherwise they always tail wagging etc.

I do wonder if it's because the locals can be very mean to the dogs ,they shoo them and often throw stones etc at them to chase them away ....and I think the dogs can sense when a person is dog friendly etc.

It's very rare that any Morrocans will look at or speak to my dogs in a friendly manner .

Maybe the dogs are "r*c1st" , Ive seen same reactions in Australia and South Africa towards indigenous by dogs owned by caucasians .

But these are strays lol. I think they just get treated better by tourists than locals .

Do the locals avoid you when you’re walking your dogs.
Well I mostly avoid them if I can but on occasion yes unless they're trying to sell me something they give us a wide berth.

If they want a sale they will sometimes brave the dogs... some will even halfheartedly try to pretend they like them. But their body language usually gives it away and I think the dogs can sense it.

Well apart from blu who can't yet comprehend that not everyone likes dogs lol.

I've to scan the horizon Well before letting her off a lead.

I had a Muslim (non-Moroccan) neighbour years ago who ripped out the hob and oven and replaced them because the previous owner had dogs and you do really need to be careful. I think there are significant differences in the acceptable 'social distance' that people tolerate which is often very cultural or religious.

We do it too. When last did you eat pork? And just-as-intelligent dog? Horse? Some don't eat pork, while some do eat dog - unthinkable to some - and horse.

Here is a Muslim scholar opining on an aspect of the dog question. He seems to acknowledge some difference of opinion among scholars

Yep as I've said before religion is mental illness lol.

What an absolutely ridiculous piece of nonsense ...wash it 7 times.

Someone was having a laugh when they originally wrote those books and never thought for a second anyone would ever take them seriously.

The irony is the Muslim countries I've been in . Morroco, Turkey, Albania etc have been the dirtiest places I've been. The waste and disease and levels of poverty have also been the worst.

There's no point washing your feet and wiping your arse with a certain hand if the environment around you is a complete shithole lol.

I do now usually try to be a bit more 'anthropological' in my approach, rather than Richard Dawkins.

So - interesting that people do this thing and believe that thing. What purpose does it serve, and so on.

There are also some interesting takes on it. For instance Tom Holland wrote a whole book where he argued that some of the things we now take for granted in our culture - eg universal human rights, equality before the law - come from Christianity. The Romans never believed all that shit - just fed them to the lions. So, Holland thinks, we've removed the cause but not the symptom.

(Note the scholar's comment about washing 7 times, only then with soil. I think there may be some doctrinal differences between the soil-firsters and the soil-lasters.)

This wont be popular here but many Muslims consider dogs to be unclean. Apparently they are mentioned in the Quran where its apparently ok to keep them as guard dogs but not as pets.

Tbf, if thats what they believe then its their country to run how they choose. The Moroccans are generally fairly tolerant of the antics of visitors.

There have been several incidents involving dogs on Morocco, thankfully most are minor ( like my wife) but some fatal.

Just smiffy and I paid by card. No mention of cash.

Paul.
I tealt he took card Tam, he probably remembered you from last time and thought your the boy is friends with that Irish fecking traveller bloke! 🤣

We got our tickets from Carlos’s on Wednesday - paid by card for the ferry but they wanted cash for the dirhams 🤷‍♀️
Probably because it is illegal to trade dirhams outside of Marocco

I think what a lot of folks on here don't get with me.

I'm single travelling with no partner. I often don't see people for weeks on end or it's just strangers.

Therfore I tend to share more than most folks on here probably as it's a way of me venting, sounding off or just working things through.

I think sometimes folk think I'm looking for solutions etc when I'm not really

Or that I'm constantly moaning etc ...which of course sometimes I am but often I'm just making conversation.

It's different when you're a couple , if I was a couple you'd probably get a few posts a day from me at best.

I'm not skint or short of cash .....I've just tucked most of my savings in to higher interest accounts to get better interest etc and I have a limited budget I preset for my trip that I can access freely . I have plenty to do me ( I hope ) I deliberately brought more euros in cash than I ever would normally because I planned to get some work done on the van etc.

I'm not in a panic or short of money ....I'm just short of the local currency which will be sorted when I get to a currency exchange place.

Being Scottish aside ....as other nationalities and regions in England are equally thrifty ( that's thrifty not tight ) I just prefer to not waste money on fees, interest etc etc if I don't have to

I was raised to be careful with money ....something I think many younger folk these days weren't....I don't see it as a bad thing , I like the fact I've no debts etc , I've avoided depreciation etc most of my life by buying wisely .

It's a hard habit to break , I would not thank you to be very wealthy and I can say that with 100% honesty. I've never gambled or played the lottery etc as I have no desire to be rich .

I'm happy to be comfortable, I'd like to not have to worry about money for the rest of my life , but I think we all do regardless of how much we have.

I'd still be the same if I was rich so what's the point lol.

I'm careful because you never know what lies around the corner, as said before I've no private pensions etc for when I retire , no offspring to support or look after me. And I've 4 dogs that could get sick or injured at anytime ...

I'm always happy to pay what I think something is worth and not more....that's where I struggle , if I can buy something for say £60 and someone tries to charge me £100+ for the same thing I feel hard done by and I can't help thinking what I could have spent that extra 40 quid on ...its just how I am and think ...I can't change that.

Anyway I hope that explains things somewhat.

I know I think different from most people that's partly my personality. My upbringing , my adhd that lurks in the background and the fact I have way more time on my hands than most to overthink and worry about things.

I like to think that most folk that follow my threads do so because they enjoy the travel , the dogs the day to day life of someone trying to live a bit differently from the norm.

I'm sure most do .....and I do appreciate the assistance , friendship and support I get from most.

What I don't like is when a few here and there seem to follow for any drama , or hardships etc and like nowt more than to put down or judge....I know those are in the minority and some may even not be their intention but its how my mind and mood interprets it so if you are here for thst ...please just sod off

Anyway ...another warm sunny day . I'm going to continue towards tagazhoute probably won't stop as all the parkups there are guarded mostly by idiots , park4night reviews show much the same experience I had there last time .

And on to the next place after there which I think has a currency exchange place and a few possible beach parkups .

They’re all mansplaining Tam, now you know what us women mean when we’re having a moan. We don’t actually want you men to offer up suggestions at all, we’ve tried them all. We just want you to listen and make the odd soothing noise until the moan is finished :giggle:

Just getting it off your chest is the bit that helps so please keep doing it. We understand. Keep doing it , we’re listening, no solutions, just the odd nod and sympathetic grunt. Take care.
