Doc on tour, France, Spain, Morroco.

Azerbaijan would be good to visit, it's quite prosperous but you need special permission to enter via a land border with your own vehicle and I think you're only allowed 30 days. My Niece's husband is Azerbaijani and i've seen some photos, it looks nice especially in the mountains.
Weren't allowed in last year when I was in Georgia as it was on my list..but lots of conflicts over that way and again it's bloody cold in winter. Lots of snow in Turkey and Georgia Jan and Feb

I might disguise myself as a dog, took 20 minutes and 30€ to get him an EU passport, I just don't fancy being microchipped!
Nor having your temperature taken 😂

Have you thought about a Portuguese visa?
I haven't...to be honest up till now I've been lazy and I've not looked in to any of them including the French one for 6 months.

But as it stands now I basically have 3 options

I either apply for one of these visas

I jump in buy land in Portugal apply for residency.

Or I give up vanlife, buy a flat and return to a normal job for at least a few years

Because 3 months isn't long enough for me to escape the UK and the really cold winters . I don't even really need high temps or constant sun I just don't want months of grey skies and rain ...I can't cope with it in a house never mind a van .
But the countries outwith shengen nowadays are not the best . If you come to Spain the only place to go is Morocco and for me it just isn't worth it. It's actually depressing me .

Going east then its Turkey but even getting there is really far.

It's not great either way really and I'm not sure what the answer is longterm .

But I need to look in to these visas....

I love Scotland and live here. I can’t imagine moving. But the weather is undoubtedly better in the SE of England. Maybe a flat down there and working for a couple of years would give you a chance to re-evaluate? As well as a change of scene.

I really don't understand all this mither, everyone keeps on about 90 days but that's not it though is it, you get two 90 days a year so all in all you actually get 6 months away, how much more do you need for god's sake.

But the six months has to be split according to the rules. Two periods of 90 days with 90 days between the visits for example.

You're not a stupid man Charlie so I fail to see what you don't understand. The weather in Scotland is shit from October to April. I've no desire to be in warmer countries in the summer . 2 x 90 days with 90 days in between doesn't give you 6 months out of UK over winter.

Half ( or at least many ) of the folk on this forum spent 5/6 months in Spain over winter each year before 2021 when they no longer could

There's a reason they did that.

We know you like the UK seasons you've told us

I Fiddlesticksin don't as I've said countless times 🤷‍♂️

You live In a house or part of a house with a big Woodburner and you're retired so can choose to work if you want or sit indoors .

I don't like freezing cold , wet , snowy or grey skies .

Or otherwise if UK isn't good enough just emigrate all together.
Again ...before 2016 I could have very easily

Now It isn't so easy

This is why I say time and time again Charlie that I'm sure you're on the windup

How much money do you think I have?
I'm 52 in a fortnight, I've no private pensions and I've not even paid enough in yet to get my full state pension . I can't retire anyway till I'm 68

I don't have enough money to buy a qualifying property and I would struggle to get a job because I can't speak most of the languages....even Spanish I'm no where near fluent.

If it was an easy thing to do I'd have done it.

My life has changed drastically since I sold up and went travelling the first time . I now have 4 dogs for a start which requires a lot of consideration in whatever I do .. and I'll have them at least the next 10 years most likely

That would give Tam a heart attack, for the price of a one bed flat down here he could buy two houses in Scotland.
Some nice single garages for sale in Brighton for £100K + :giggle:

Aye and to be honest I'm not sure I'd want to buy somewhere down there where I don't know anyone. If I was buying a flat it would be back where I'm from .

or whether one can avoid the 90/180 rule if one is visiting the British Sovereign Bases of Dhekalia and Akrotiri?
Absolutely Geoff, as Service Personnel and Civilians contracted to MOD, fly out to RAF Akrotiri on a Service Travel Order, not a passport, though they are required to hold a valid one nonetheless.

As a visiting tourist on a British Passport, flying into Paphos or Larnaca, the rules are different.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

The 90/180 days caused us problems, even though we only used to go twice 8 weeks nut more than 180 days between. It was the months we liked. But having now retired from motorhoming it makes no difference to me. But I do understand Tams problem. It’s a shame no one thought of having reciprocal rules as Europe
