I'll shortly be SORNing a 4 year old VW (petrol) and leaving it parked up for 10 to 12 weeks. It has the factory immobiliser, but no alarm. To prevent the battery completely discharging I'm planning on disconnecting it. Any thoughts? Downsides?

Thanks.

If u dont have any solar then do that.
Used to take my batteries out of car and van when away for 6 months.
Always amazed me when refitted both vehicles started on first turn of key.

No way of running a trickle charger out to it?

Cheers James

Will the immobiliser work when the battery has been disconnected? Presumably you're parking it somewhere reasonably secure.

I'm presuming that with the battery disconnected then nothing will work - therefore no slow parasitic drain. If the battery is disconnected then the vehicle is essentially immobilised anyway, and if the battery was to go flat during the 10 weeks then the immobiliser would not be functioning anymore either. I'm probably completely misunderstanding how basic car immobilisers work, but don't they just prevent someone trying to start the car without a "coded" key?

Ps. Parked on a quiet residential cul-de-sac, with watchful neighbours. Not really able to attach a trickle charger.
