Diesel price shock

I paid £1.76 yesterday at Tesco Southampton

I just saw it at £1.89 in Bp Biggleswade strange when the others in the area have dropped the price a bit.

169.9 at Sainsburys in Hawick today

Sainsburys have just sent me a triple Nectar point voucher on fuel this morning, Shame it wasn't the 8p off a litre one we used to get now & again.;)
Wife still only puts £25 in a a time in the car though, we take the van up there with the 8p off a litre one, if it hasn't run out.

In Southampton both Tesco and Sainsbury's have turned their prices off on the signs, so you only know the price at the pump

Here in France we filled up ten days ago and paid 1.73 € a litre. A fuel lorry arrived as we left. When we drove past the same garage two hours later it had gone up to 2.49 € a litre.

BUT while I hate paying for fuel as we do a very high mileage, I absolutely do not mind at present if it helps the poor people of Ukraine. and it will if it puts pressure on Dictator Putin.

I think that this is a time to pull together and not blame the Government (and I am absolutely no fan of the present crowd). We do need to take it on the chin however and support any pressure on Russia despite our own hardship.

If you are not sure look at pictures of the now totally destroyed Mariupol. We talk about the great British spirit in the blitz. The Ukrainians are just as brave and need our support.

I suspect the duties on fuel are paid as it leaves the refinery / depot. So that is where the cut is applied. Fuel at a filling station prior to 6pm yesterday thus already had the duty before the cut. For high use filling stations their prices will drop quickly reflecting their next delivery, yet other's could take some time for their next refil. But then that might explain discrepancies in how some prices also appeared to rise, out of sync. Supermarkets may perhaps, due to volume across their network, apply a more centralised base price up/down, timed at certain times of day, but even so they have regional / local variations. It always seems easier for the prices to speculate up, rather than recover down.

That's a bit of good luck but it'll only be temporary before the price starts rising again. The oil and gas market is going to remain volatile for years to come and in all honesty the diesel supply system could fall apart very soon.

There's even talk of diesel fuel rationing being implemented across Europe so the likelihood of having diesel prices @ £2+ per liter is something that we should all start getting prepared for IMO.

.....and I'm sure we'll have a few protests developing in France, Italy and Spain soon enough and that'll bring even more heartache to anyone travelling.

Either way there's no good news ahead for 2022.

It's the garage that pays the duty to their supplier and they have no obligation to pass the reduction on to the public :( They can charge whatever they wish.

Since the fuel in the storage tank of the fuel station will have had duty paid on it already they would be quite correct in not reducing the resale price until they refilled their storage. If the fuel station has reduced their price it's a gesture of goodwill on their part.

I'm not saying that the reduction should not be passed on just that there is no obligation to do so.

irnbru IanF Ashley F just so you are aware that Sainsbury in Hawick is often cheaper for fuel than Sainsbury in Kelso. Asda in Galashiels or Berwick is often the cheapest around and worth filling up at Asda if you are in the area but not worth a special trip.

I agree with Blue Knight 's assessment and wish there was a way not to use diesel. Electric not an option for us at the moment and changing one fossil fuel powered vehicle to a different type of fossil fuel doesn't solve the issues. :(

The AA director? was on the radio yesterday saying that the price of a barrel had dropped over the last week which equates to an 8p drop per litre so adding the 5p we should be looking for a 13p drop, but the excuses will be we paid higher price so using that up first and he said the the supermarkets have a quick turnaround when it comes to using up their stocks so they shouldn’t be using that excuse 🤷‍♂️

Ref paragraph 2, so why is it when prices go up the fuel already in their storage tanks goes up immediately! surely that should be sold atthe old price !! :giggle: :giggle:

They need the extra money to buy the next load 🤑😆

I'm glad I got rid of our diesel car. The poxy 1L petrol thing we've got now doesn't look too bad anymore 🚙👌

Just got back from Tennerife where locals were complaining about the price increase in fuel €1.35 litre????????? 🤔

He was very wrong to say that (from an analytical perspective).

The AA director is referring to the $130 spike which lasted a day or so before dropping back over a couple of days on the 16th March.

Since the 16-Mar the oil price has been very robustly increasing to a $121 trading price.

There's a whole load of issues developing in the oil, gas, heating oil, processed fuel markets so expect some really bad tuebelunce for the next few years.

The forecourt manager can charge whatever the market will bear and if people are expecting an imminent price rise they will pay it without question.
