Is this something easily sorted? Can I just remove whole filter case and replacing this rather than trying to open it to replace the O ring and filter itself? Have read this is a common fault with Fiat Ducato vans. How easy is this to do? Do I need to clean up where diesel has fallen or will this evaporate away??

Take it back.

Take it back to workshop the filter has been over tightened it’s common mistake and will probably result in a new filter housing
it cost me £300 in Germany I now carry a spare bought of eBay for £70
if you do replace it yourself it’s a 10 minute job

Just change the complete filter with housing, available in e bay ,a 30 min job don't try to renew the seals unless your filter is one of the metal types
Deisel will not Evaporate, cover it in sand and sweep it up then clean the area with detergent.

This is a common problem with Ducato,Fiat and Citroen vans.
It's possibly been overtightened or has cross threaded.
If you buy a new one be careful taking off the pipes as they usually have the crimp type hose clips which can be a nightmare to get off.

Same as above.
I bought the fixture, serviced the filter as per the correct process(30Nm for the large top nut) and still got a leak.
As many on here , got a complete unit for £60 odd via Ebay and fitted that.
Now no more problems.

Yes , there is a knack to getting the pipes off , push the plastic collar deeper into the filter body (with an open ended spanner or similar forked tool) and simultaneously pull the pipe out.

Buy a complete housing off eBay. Honestly it’s a five to ten minute job to change. I now carry a spare. I last changed it in a pub car park in the new forest whilst my wife was having a glass of wine in the beer garden.
I changed the fuel filter went into the pub bought and drank a pint before she had finished her wine.

Thanks for the help and advice. Think I will go with removing the whole unit, sounds more straightforward. Is it a standard unit. Have looked on ebay and there are few different ones. The one on our van sits tucked into righthand rear of engine housing, is green on top and black below. (See image)

It has to be the correct filter and housing as the wiring loom has plugs to fit only that one. But it is common to a few vehicles. The later metal housing does not fit

You just bought it then get the dealer to sort it out if it's leaking a lot make HIM collect it on a trailer too diesel spillage is costly if you get a bill from the council

I don’t think the dealer would need to recover it. It’s a five to ten minuet job at the side of the road. I didn’t even need any tools just hands.
