whats the best way to descale a kettle - the sort that you place on a gas ring to boil it , NOT the electric element type.

We have a bean-to-cup coffee machine which we HAVE to descale regularly with a specific product (EcoDecalk) to comply with the warranty. I think it would be a rip-off if it were not for me using it to decalk everything else with it once it has passed through the machine, kettles included!

or drop a kids marble in there or a pebble .it rattles around and removers the scale .
my parents always had one in the kettle when we lived in weymouth a very scaley water area .

White vinegar, just leave it in for a couple of hours. It's cheap in France so I always take a few bottles home with me.

Years ago you could buy a small ball of some kind of inert wire to drop in the kettle.
Don't know if it acted as a sacrificial anode or simply scraped the timescale off.
Not sure if they are still available.

We do the same. Once everything is discalced it finally goes down the loo to rescale overnight.

If you buy a packet of citric acid from a home brew shop a teaspoon in the kettle, filled with water then boiled will remove all scale and without any smell of vinegar. :) Just keep an eye on it - the scale will vanish before your eyes so stop as soon as it has gone.
The same stuff can be used for hot water systems, which is what I do.

We found little metal things that look like baby pan scourers in Wilko for a £1 each, leave them in the kettle,it's soon spotless and when they are no longer shiny run them under the cold tap while scrunching them.
We have extremely hard water and Andrea says they last six months and the kettle is always clear plus the tea tastes better.
They are marked as kettle descaler.

Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
I use citric acid as mentioned above, but if run out of that, cheap white vinegar from a Cash & Carry near you, at around £3 for 4.5 litres. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
