We are going up to Denmark to visit an old friend at the end of this month and I just looked up the cost of a ferry from north Germany (Puttgarten ) to Rodby.. It costs 200 Euros return !!!!!!!! Do any of you know a cheaper crossing ??? We are going Dover/ Calais to visit some other friends in South Holland, then some more in Freisland, then off up up to Denmark.. Any advice gratefully received .... Mitch.

We got back from Jutland a month or so ago. Why not drive all the way? No tolls on roads in Holland, Germany or Denmark other than the Storebaelt (bridge between Funen and Zealand). We took 3 days from Dover without hurrying going via Utrecht, north of Arnhem, through the Elbe tunnel in Hamburg and up through Flensburg. Once past Flensburg its a quick run up to the bridge to the route across Denmark. This route was mostly motorway all the way - boring at times but cost effective in terms of fuel and time.

Surprisingly fuel in Denmark is the cheapest we have encountered in Europe other than Luxembourg. The cost of the Storebaelt is currently 235Kr or 355Kr for a camper depending on length and it being under 3.5 tonnes. Over 3.5 and the cost doubles. Rates of exchange around 9.1 kr to the pound. This makes it cheaper than the ferry. A quick glance at the map suggests the distances would be roughly the same for your proposed route and mine.

Hope you have a great trip - we motorhomers don't do these northern parts often enough.

Not that it will be any use to you but Sundowners on their Nordkapp thread got a good price from Travemunde to Malmo, so considering the distance 200 euros is a bit steep.

As CarolynandMike say the bridge is the way to go look Link Removed for costs, but as seasoned Faroes/Danish exchange rate people we're getting about 8.60 to the pound at the moment, we find we get the best rate changing pounds sterling in Denmark, particularly at Danske Bank. Easy driving in Denmark too, we're on the road from Hirtshals to Esbjerg next month.

Many thanks to you both for the heads-up.. Makes a lot of sense.. We are only going to Vordingborg, but that route gives a better look around as well so thanks again.. Mitch and Jenny.. :thumb:
