Hi Folks,

A quick search as per the title brings up mostly Covid related posts hence asking here.

In relation to Home-Start (sometimes as an extra) does anyone know what breakdown recovery policies define as Home? Is this where I live or where the Motorhome is storred?

My 'van is stored about 16miles away and I'd like to confirm that if when I go and get it there is a problem, I'm covered or I DO need "Home-Start".

I need some UK (for now) cover to start in April and I'm looking around. CAMC Mayday seems reasonable but I don't have access to terms/conditions/definitions particularly on the Home-Start point; other providers will be researched too so any recommendations welcomed and I will be searching on here too...

Thanks very much.

If you have "home" cover it really means that you are covered anywhere, whatever or wherever the insurer defines as " home ".

When I was doing breakdown work home start was to cover working on the owners property. I have known people push a car to the end of the street to save paying for home start. Another trick was to say they broke down elsewhere and there mate towed them home.
If the storage is sixteen miles away you can use normal breakdown cover without home start.

Home cover is an extra incase you break down usually within a quarter mile of home.
Without it you're not covered within quarter mile of home.
If you find you have a flat battery etc at your storage yard you're covered anyway as you are more than quarter mile from home.

Fair point, however, the Mayday terms suggest that Home and Storage mean the same thing so without Home cover, they won't come and help with problems at storage as the vehicle will technically be at "Home".

Lots of options out there but the CAMC Mayday (GreenFlag) Premium UK at £105 seems reasonable. Others are touching £200 that I've found thus far and I've not yet considered European cover! I'll keep looking...

We have a NationWide FlexPlus account (£13pm) and it covers motorhomes upto 7.5T or 8m for At Home (we've had a starter battery replaced), breakdown and rescue in UK and Europe. Worth considering?

Gordon

It also covers our car, obviously.

I was going on exactly that basis as our cars and indeed my Westfield is covered but the T's and C's (NatWest) say the Motorhome is too big at 7.7m and 4T. :(

Once upon a time you would have been able to change your NatWest current account for a NationWide current account and get £100 (plus £100 to the "friend" who recommended this ;) ). Sadly, you would also have got 5 or 6% interest on money in the account and the fees were only £6. Those days have gone!

However, even just changing from one to the other may be worthwhile: check it out and compare the "freebies" (travel ins, phone ins are the main ones). Despite the loss of interest and the hike in charges, it still represents good value to me (but I only keep a small amount of cash in there now). Virgin Money (recommended by Minxy Girl ) gives interest and 15 bottles of wine :giggle: (non-alcoholic option is available) so they have gained my custom at the expense of TSB.

Unfortunately the Virgin offer has reduced so it's only 12 bottles now however they also give £50 to charity too which they didn't before:

Change your insurance to safeguard where full europe wide breakdown is included as standard it includes unlimited glass and onward travel so if you break down they give you a car to get home etc ive used it in anger and had my van recovered from near Eurotunnel to scotland while i drove home in a brand new car.

Can't complain really

That's not right ... we're gonna have to find something else for you to complain about instead! 😄

Went for Mayday via CAMC in the end. Bank and other insurance policies won't cover and the other specialist breakdown/recovery providers could not match the level of cover for the price; those that can look too good to be true and the reviews were shocking!

Seems extortionate to me.
I'm with green flag, roadside and full recovery to home or garage, my choice, and I pay around £5 month.
Have you enquired the cost if you go direct to green flag instead of through those who stick a load of extra cash on for the privilege.

Depends in you need multi-trip Europe cover though ...

  • European cover There’s no limit on the number of trips you can take to Europe within a year, but there's a limit of 90 days cover per policy year. (Only available for cars less than 16 years old.)

Yep, went to Green Flag direct, they won't cover as I'm over 3.5t and 7m.
