Hoping someone can confirm - I’ve just received the registration papers for our new Motorhome - with ‘22 plate - which we are picking up from dealer next Friday 4/3 (As can’t get it on the 1st for work reasons). We’ve just noticed that the Date of first registration however is showing as 9/3/22 Does this matter??

Only if you want to drive it.

I’m sorry but that’s not really very helpful! can only assume you mean it’s a major problem? If so can you please confirm that.

There is no problem it just means your motorhome is a bit older than when you first get it. Mot will be sooner and more importantly your warranty will expire a little earlier. From a road traffic act side it is perfectly legal as long as it is registered taxed and insured.

Best bet is two phone the dealer .Ps hope all goes well for you. (y)

I'm reading the opening post as that the registration date is after the date it is collected.

not according to the DVLA who I’ve just spoken to - apparently it can’t be driven Until 9th March! And of course the dealer we dealt with isn’t working today 🤬
Yes. That's what I meant. It's not a problem if it's off the road. Wasnt sure when you were collecting it. I'm not aware that you could tax it without it being registered.

Can the dealer re register it?

Trade Plates?
Could that be an option - ie dealer let’s us use them and send them back after 9th? The DVLA lady suggested they maybe able to change the date but the person I spoke to at dealer just now said they aren’t in till Monday either. I’m absolutely fuming - why the hell did they not put 1/3 automatically?! And we have ALWAYS been picking it up on the 4th! but suspect that would cause problems with insurance?

I don’t know but- guess it depends on how long that would take. It’s a complete and utter f@&k up on their part! Fuming!

Surely it's Obviously an Error, can't register it in the Future...

The 1st is still in the future. The problem seems to be that the new owner was collecting it on 4th but it will not be legal to drive on the road until the 9th.
I’m hoping my motorcycle dealer hasn’t made a similar mistake re registering my new bike as I am picking it up on Tuesday.
I’m going to France on it in May and just out of curiosity tried to book the tunnel with my new reg number. Number not recognised was the reply. I’ll try again next week.
Hopefully the OP can get this sorted satisfactorily by the day they want to collect it.

I think I'm right in saying that you cannot use trade plates for anything that's not connected to the owners work and their employees must drive the vehicle used?

Their use is very restricted these days. Sorry!

I’ve taken vehicles including motorcycles out on test runs with the intention of buying whilst on trade plates. So the OP may be able to take their motorhome to their house. I doubt they can use trade plates to have a trip away though.

Just mention your collect it on the 9th when you get back from your short unexpected break . Sorted

I'm guessing that a badly written 4 was read as a 9.

Not surprised you are fuming, I would be as well.

Can use for demonstration purpose if Demo included on Trade Insurance Certificate, with Joe Public driving as long as Trade Plate Owners employee is sat in the Passenger seat, unless it's a 2 wheeled vehicle...

The 1st would be the Tax start date, when New Vehicles are Registered via V55 they also have to be Taxed, Car Tax always starts on the 1st of the month, immaterial of Reg Date...

Not really true. If my bike isn’t registered on the 1st then I cannot use it on the road on the 1st. It also cannot be taxed until it is registered. The OPs vehicle whilst being registered on the 9th will be taxed from the 1st but it cannot be taxed until it is registered. Therefore they will lose 8 days of tax.

Isn't that just a First World problem.
It was my understanding that one could book a slot on Euro tunnel without the Reg. No
IE How would you book a slot prior to your journey if you were hiring the vehicle.

I’ll just book it when I’ve collected the bike. It’s not as if I won’t be able to get on. I’ve Not had any problems booking a motorbike on at the last minuet before as they use us at the back of each carriage to fill up spaces not large enough for other vehicles. Yeah, it is a first world problem though. It is in fact a nice problem that I am lucky enough to have.

I've booked ferries without a registration and the current van booked a return on the tunnel went out on my UK registered van and came back in the new one with Belgium plates, I just used the manned booth.

I guess it is one that had to be sent to the DVLA for registration (which includes taxation) rather than being done at dealer premises using the RaV scheme. If the vehicle is not showing as being registered until 09/03/2022 it is illegal to drive it on the highway. Insurance would also be invalid if the worst happened, so just not a risk worth taking. With regard to tradeplates, a person employed by the company that hold the trade plate must accompany the driver if the trade plates are being used. If not, again, no insurance. I would ask the dealer to try and "de- register" and re-register on the correct date. If that is not possible then teach him some good old Anglo Saxon and ask what he intends to do to compensate you for the inconvenience.

I agree, I think the OP was hoping, in post #11, to borrow the Trade Plates and send them back on the 9th as an option which would not be allowed.

Our van is 2.5 years old and Eurotunnel still does not recognise my reg number, its a standard one not private

Thanks everyone - I’ll just have to wait till Monday to speak to the dealer - hopefully they can de register and re register but not sure how long that will take. I just don’t know why they didn’t register it for 1/3! I’m more than happy to have taxed it for then if needs be - no problem at all! Obviously some one has cocked up at the dealer - and I can be certain that the chap I’m dealing with won’t enjoy our conversation first thing Monday morning!!. Worst case scenario we have to take a day off work to collect on the 9th as we’ve got it booked into Vanbitz in the 11th. And they’ll be putting a full tank of petrol in it at the very least!

I wouldn’t rely on what the dealer says, he might want to cover up the mistake. The DVLA is the authority and at least one Funster has been pulled over for driving before registration. When I picked up my motorhome the dealer would not let me drive it off his forecourt until the registration came through the next day.

Have you checked the online details match the documents you have received? The online records are what matter to the Police and ANPR systems.
