Can anyone advise what the best deal is for a data only SIM (not a monthly contract) for occasional use with an iPad/MiFi and valid for 12 months?

if its only occasional use you are probably better off just tethering to your phone assuming you have enough data allowance

Three do a few different capacity data only sims, 1gb, 3gb, 12gb and 24gb, lasting 1 month, 3 months, 12 months and 24 months respectively once used for the first time (or until you use the data, whichever comes first).

The best 'value' is the 24gb one which lasts for up to 24 months, however if you don't need that much then the 12gb one which lasts 12 months is the next best value. If you do buy one elsewhere make sure that it is the 'Internet with legs' one as there are some 12gb phone ones that only last 30 days.

Another + for the 3 Internet With Legs sims. We use the 24GB in a mifi which usually gives us more than enough for our use. Got good reception (but usually only 3G) all over Europe. Just a tip, use it in the UK in between trips so that you don't get caught by the 2 month out-of-UK rule.
I usually keep an eye open for the occasional deals and get a spare - we have actually been known to run out!

I've given up trying to work out the best deal for me.

3 with legs mobile broadband I even use it at home as not usually home much except this year! so box comes with us wherever we are. I’ve tried smarty but no reception at home so not much good even though it’s cheaper.

Guys thanks to you all. I just ordered the 3 with legs 24GB valid for 24 months and I'm very happy with that. Great advice and to be frank I only ever expect 3G. If 4G pops up it's a bonus. I bought it from MyMemory although there was a punter in Germany offering it at £5 less. Didn't even consider it as they probably would have charged postage that would have swallowed up the discount.

Smartly is owned by 3 and runs on the same network.
So if your Smarty sim is not working and a 3 one will, you need to check the settings of your phone/MIFI.
