Dashcam's in Europe

How do the laws differentiate between a camera fixed on the dash, a hand-held video camera or an ordinary camera or one in a phone or ipad?

It's just utterly ridiculous that Data Protection rules hinder public safety...

It's a privacy thing mostly in places which ban them I think. But it's their country so they can set what laws they like. :)

I have been picked up at Roscoff (France) when the immigration bloke wanted it turned off. He didn't like the idea of their security arrangements being recorded - but this was only a single occasion.

Last year we travelled to Spain taking the scenic route,, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Spain then France on return. Had the Dashcam on the top of the dash (Fiat,, centre tray) and never gave a thought to how my bank balance could have been lightened by plod being alert. Will remember now that I know to put in glove box when abroad.

Had the GoPro on Harley from zeebrugge to Slovenia and back inc Austria, never been stopped, although I wish I had it on when I got knocked of in Austria:mad:

Mines on permanently when travelling.135 days consecutively last year. First thing I turn on every day.

Have two hardwired permanently to both motorhome and car here in France. No problems in the past 5 years having travelled between France, Spain, Germany, Italy and UK.

Me being a bit of a rebel and risk taker, I’ve done about 40 thousand miles all over Europe and not been questioned yet on it and I have been stopped a few times, I’ve even had my speed camera on sat-nag on and been questioned by french police. .......

Saw it on FB this morning and thought a few things

HERE in the UK the Police like us to have them on so they can have independent video evidence

France if you have and accident or witness an accident the footage goes to the Police as standard

Have just seen this on faceache and was amazed that it is illegal to use a dashcam in various places,, and also there are restrictions in others.

Worth a read.
Thank you very much for this information.
I will remove the dashcam when entering Portugal in future, although against my better judgement, not wishing to incur a fine.
This is the same country where driving on motorways and paying their tolls confuses even the Portuguese but they did announce that Brits could still use their roads free, whatever Brexit did.

Why is it stupid? Surely it's just a different point of view of what is important.

Not sure all that info is fully up to date. Here you can buy dash cams at many local stores, there been a set on the counter of our local DIY store for over a year. When i questioned if you were allowed to use one here in CH i got a rather puzzled look and it seems they are becoming increasingly popular, had mine in for almost 2yrs now and it goes everywhere across Europe with me.

Although not legal in Germany or Austria I have never had any issues either in the van or with bike mounted gopro's

Noticed the UK customs at Folkestone had no photography signs when I went through last week. Standard practice but presumably not that over bothered by dash cams.

I have used a dashcam since they first came out.

I have used them all over Europe. I have been stopped by French, Swiss, German and Austrian police and several times by Spanish. The camera sticks out like a sore thumb, never even been questioned.

When I say stopped, they have always been roadside spot checks.

In fact, I was going to try and design/spec a mini car quad CCTV system to market. Just too busy frying other fish.

Maybe there is market for something else ?.

Governments want to make GPS telematics in vehicles compulsory

Governments are against personal use of dashcams or at least try to restrict them

Hmmm ... let's think for a minute ... which of the above does not provide a potential revenue stream?

The article was dated 1st August 2018 so not that old. Maybe Which are not always up to date with their reports.

Got told to turn dash cam off as we went through Harwich terminal last year

Many officials, including some UK Police, are uncomfortable with being videoed. In most cases they have no more, or less, right to privacy than you do. Research it if you are interested. There are a few freedom advocates out their testing where video and photography is not allowed. Actually not many places at all. As it should be considering the number of CCTV cameras watching us.
