When we went over the bridge in April there was a huge, probably four mile tailback of vehicles trying to get to the Essex side, most of it hardly moving and it looked like the booths were still in place. We will be rerunning next week and I was wondering if anyone had experience such severe delays lately. I know there is nothing we can do about it but its nice to know what we might be facing on our journey home.

It really does depend on what time of day you get to the crossing.
Weekdays rush "hours" are obviously busy, but nothing like it used to be when they had the barriers.
Outside of those hours there's not normally a queue - just a slowing of the traffic.

Why can't they abolish the toll? .......no toll bridges or tunnels in Scotland.

barriers can be raised and left raised at the flick of a switch.. no work involved..
why do they still go up and down with every car ?

They are not taking payment..
Possibly to avoid a queue in the tunnels? but they should be gone altogether eventually

It's still a temporary layout. Eventually all the booths / barriers will be removed

No excuse for queues.....congestion zones in london don't have queues
They don't have tunnels either. :D
Even when it is all completed there will always be restrictions/barriers/traffic lights & a 40(?) mph limit on the north bound tunnel side. This is due to the regulations requiring the ability to stop traffic instantly to prevent a tail back being able to be formed in the tunnel in the event of an incident.
The regulations were further strengthened after the Mont.Blanc tunnel fire.

If people would instantly obey a red light then they wouldn't need the ability to drop barriers in front of vehicles.(y)

When there is something happening at Lakeside or Bluewater i.e. Sales or something like that, it causes delays.

went over the bridge on Friday last week , back through the tunnel on Monday no problem both ways. being a stranger in the area didn't realise that you no longer pay at booths, did'nt have the laptop so spent most of Saturday trying to find the address of the shop that the tourist information gave us where we could pay the dart charge, finely got it paid, what a farce. I'll pre-book the next time now I know.
